Brilliant horror film, but not the book. Stephen King was very angry with Kubrick for the changes he made to the story. The book is brilliant too, but not really a horror story. The book is about alcoholism and how it destroys families. King came from a family like that and he was also an alcoholic and drug addict for many years. The Jack Torrance in the book overcame his alcoholism and the influence of the evil in the hotel. In the end sacrificed himself to save his family.
Kubrick was an accomplished and influential director, but he always had his own agenda in every one of his films. Dr. Strangelove is still my favorite and even though it was made 60 years ago, it's influence is clearly visible in Fallout.

I am glad you "liked" the movie. It has always been one of my favourites. Director Stanley Kubrick has made a lot of fantastic movies like: Spartacus (1960), Lolita (1962), Dr. Strangelove (1964), 2001: a Space Odyssey (1968), A clockwork Orange (1971), Full metal jacket (1987) are all considred to be amongst the most influential films ever made... and I agree with that after having seen these listed multiple times.
Your reaction itself is an adventure to watch :D
