The scene with the assassin really shows Toranaga's character. He's an expert swordsman, so he could have killed her with a single blow but he didn't. He stabbed her in the lung so she would weaken slowly as she bled internally. He wanted her to suffer and to know that she had failed at the mission she had been training for her entire life. He is absolutely ruthless.
