Western cultures are built around the importance of the individual, which flows largely from Christian tradition and the idea that every person has a God given soul which is uniquely valuable. Japanese culture is built around the group. An individual's worth is tied to their position in and service to the group. The conflict over the pheasant is a perfect illustration of that difference. If you can wrap your head around that, then everything the Japanese do in this story becomes understandable.

The things Toranaga said about the falcon is probably the single most important speech in the entire show. Remember it.

what i love about this show is that even when it is not as fast paced the tension is still there. to answer your question about lady ochiba yes you have seen her previously in ep 2 i think when there was a flash back to the taikos death . and yes she is very important as you guessed.
