Bear in mind that Toranaga doesn't show his secret heart to anyone, except perhaps Mariko. Ochiba knows it too, and yes Ochiba is a major villain. Oshido really isn't very smart. He's like the falcon who goes for the lure, but sees nothing else.
Japanese ideals at this time were Confucian which didn't require fidelity of men in marriage. The wife was in charge of the household and the raising of children. What men did in the Willow World, which much later became the Geisha , was of no interest to them. Love in marriage was secondary.
I hope this episode gives some understanding of Buntaro and the the way he acts. He thought he was getting a marriage that would raise the status of his clan, but instead he got the daughter of traitor who brought great shame on him and his family. That's why I can't hate him.

It is a lot of fun watching the series with you and listen to your interpretations and insights.
In case you wonder about the "issue" between the Portugese and Anjin's wish to fight them. The Portugese were the first Europeans who were granted access to Japan. Japan had been completely isolated from outside influence for many centuries.
As a result of the Portugese influence Christianity was introduced to the Japanese and as you can see in the series people converted to the Catholic faith. But the Japanese didn't know about the reformation and the rise of Protestantism in Europe. England had (under Henri VIII) found its own church and broke away from Catholicism. And most of North West Europe broke away from the mother chucrch around the same time.
In their race to find a route to "India" The Spanish and Portugese had the lead in the 15 and 16th century. Eventually also the English, French but more importantly for Japan, the Dutch surpassed the influence of Portugal and Spain. The Japanese kicked the Portugese out of Japan and forbade any foreign trade with the exception of the Dutch ( and Chinese) who were allowed to trade from the artificial island of Dejima at the coast of Nagasaki. This way the Japanese acquired European science and trade goods but stopped further spreading of christianity. The Dutch remained the sole European trading partner of Japan until the mid 19th Century when the United States forced japan to open up trade with the US.
Remember that the ship Anjin arrived on in Japan was a Dutch merchant ship :-)

love the reaction and yes you are totally right to laugh at the awkwardness hahaha. it may not be full of action but the feels are real in this one . also just to explain as it hasnt really properly explained but kinda left it hanging with a little bit of plot. Ishido hates toranaga because of who he is and his blood line that were shogun in the past and he fears that he will lose his position of power. this was kinda explained in an earlier episode but not very well. but i gotta say i laughed right alongside you and also noticed your reaction after mariko left :)
