You can research a Fata Morgana Mirage online but explained briefly, it's an optical illusion created by layers of air of different temperatures (warm, cool, cold) which bend light rays at different angles. Our brain assumes that light travels in a straight path to our eyes (when in reality, in the right weather conditions the light "bends" in a sort of arched path) so our brain interprets and sees the image in a higher position to where it originally is, creating the illusion that the object is "floating". As this happens at sea, the floating objects are often ships. And that's how the Flying Dutchman's legend was born.
