Love you all H & J ❤️❤️

I agree with Heather on the fact that in anime they show emotions very well. While in regular TV if the actor doesn’t nail the facial expression it can ruin the whole experience for you. This is why I don’t watch a lot of regular Tv and never have because the acting and portrayal of emotions is often times mediocre. It feels like the actor is acting the role and not actually being the character. Or the actor can’t capture the emotion in their face properly. Like I’ve noticed a lot of actors can’t portray sadness, worry, or anger that well. It bothers me so much I wanna turn off the show/movie. I’ve seen you guys have better facial expressions and portrayal of emotions while watching anime than a lot of actors nowadays. ❤️

~ Bun-sensei's Japanese corner ~ ~ ken ~ Meaning: sword, blade (also swordsmanship) Reading: 'ken' [like the name 'Ken' but closer to British pronunciation of it] Kanji writing: 剣 [also reads as 'tsurugi'] The word 'ken' has a broad meaning. It is used to describe basically any type of weapon similar to the sword (so any bladed weapon) but especially to a large, double-edged one. So it could be used to refer to long swords, sabres, bayonets and even daggers (which Thorfinn uses). Katana have their own word but they could be described as 'ken' as well, though it's not often. The word Thorfinn uses to call his weapon he got from his father is 'tanken' [短剣], it means a short sword or a dagger. The word 'ken' can be also used to refer, somewhat poetically, to a swordsmanship. For example the sentence: "Kimi no ken wa amai desu." "君の剣は甘いです。" would literally mean: "Your sword is sweet [naïve]." but its meaning is closer to: "Your swordsmanship is lacking." / "Your technique is too soft." / "Your strikes are unrefined." PS Let's watch it now~!

Since you said it wasn't overwhelming, here's the next long one... 👀

Hi, guys! I'm not a Japanese, keep guessing, haha~ I'm also not a professional writer but I write from a young age, now mostly poetry though since I don't have time for a longer forms nor a story I want to write at the moment. I wish to write something as amazing as OP one day! 1. Sorry for the confusion with the word "umi". It's as you pronounced it at the very beginning, simply 'oo' + 'mee'. 2. I think what you should did for this show is to get rid of expectations for cliché stroytelling: - Thinking we're gonna follow the story of a cool viking warrior character, Thors? -> Nope, he gets killed. - Thinking now Thorfinn is gonna get revenge? -> Nope, he is a warrior, he needs to fight in a propel duel. - Thinking Thorfinn is gonna have a duel with Askeladd? -> Nope, he's just a 6yo kid, nobody would take a child seriously. The difference in body size, mass etc. is immeasurable - Askeladd doesn't even need a weapon to defeat him and could kill him easily. Also manipulating him eaaasily with a promise of a duel as a bait. Children are naive afterall... - Thinking we're getting story of Thorfinn getting stronger? -> Nope, we get a story of struggle to survive each day, dying of thirst, forgetting about pride from hunger, being powerless against nature etc. - Thinking Askeladd or any other men are going to pity him and help him? -> Nope, they couldn't care less. Askeladd is even sending him off to many dangerous situations, probably to get him killed so he doesn't have to. [I think maybe Askeladd doesn't want to kill the child of a man he respected, so instead he's trying to let the nature or somebody else do the deed...?] - Thinking Thorfinn gets cool, glorious moments on the battlefield? -> Nope, the reality of war and battlefield is just chaos, violent hell with the views so terrible they make you puke and keep you awake at night... - Thinking Thorfinn is a child-hero on a quest of revenge? -> Nope, he becomes twisted and his view of the world gets warped... He's a broken child who would become insane if he didn't turn his heart into stone and who would get killed if he didn't kill first. It's tragic and sad. He was maybe around 12yo when he helped pillage the village? He did not understood his actions until it was too late and when he did, he again turned cold, probably as a coping mechanism of the brain to protect itself from getting destroyed... Now Thorfinn is 16yo (?) and it seems like his only reason for living is the revenge... So heartbreaking... 3. I really liked Ylva's storytelling. Throwing herself into work so she doesn't have to face her emotions... It's probably relatable to so many people these days... In this small part of the story you can see how the narrative of the whole show works - the most important things are those that aren't said to us directly! All important details and things that elevate this story are either hidden in the visuals or simply in the context of the scene. In the Things Unsaid. ♥ 4. Yes, the music, the piano score are amazing. And some drawings look like paintings. I was so amazed by the detailed drawings, the vivid colours, beautiful sceneries... Piano in the background is chillingly beautiful. I think it's supposed to underscore the ephemeral atmosphere of the characters' surroundings? They all add to the tragedy. We can see how the beauty of nature contrasts with the ugliness of humans. 5. I believe you can watch the ending now, that you've seen older Thorfinn. I think there are no more spoilers. Somebody, please correct me, if I'm wrong. 6. You catched it right! The opening song starts with English and then goes into Japanese. The song mixes both languages.

Got nothing to add. 👏

I totally get why Thorfinn might come across as a "good kid" at first glance - he's young, skilled, and we've seen his tragic backstory. But I think it's important to view him not as a traditional underdog hero, but as a deeply tragic character. He’s not on some noble quest - we’re watching a boy consumed by grief and revenge, slowly losing himself. That moment when he helps the Vikings slaughter the English village, including the woman who once showed him kindness, is a huge turning point. It's not just about survival or war anymore! It's a sign of how far gone he is. Thorfinn’s journey isn't about rising as a hero (and he is no Luffy) - it’s about the cost of hatred and how a life fueled by revenge twists even the most innocent into something unrecognizable. Askeladd may seem like a father figure, but it’s a toxic dynamic. He manipulates Thorfinn, keeps him close like a weapon on a leash. It's complex, sure - but it's not mentorship, and definitely not guidance in the way we’d hope for a young protagonist. That’s what makes Vinland Saga so powerful. It doesn’t hand us easy heroes or villains. Just broken people in a brutal world.
