The part where Luffy is sliding down like that made me cringe just as hard the first time I saw it. It's so horrifying. But also, it IS filler, and I personally think that it's a bit much, lol. It's funny, because the actual climbing is making Luffy bleed a lot, and they cut down on that instead! Edited, because I posted before I was done, but; I really love this arc, it's got so many great character moments. We start to see Luffy grow, and we also start to see aspects of his character more clearly that we haven’t seen yet. The way he climbs that mountain with Nami and Sanji (and I think it’s a deliberate choice to include Sanji, so as to make it about crew and not misunderstood as romantic) really shows how far he will go for those who belong to him. The theme about taking responsibility according to your position (as a king, in this case), and about abusing your position, tying back into Vivi’s story again is also done really well, I think. And hey, the first mention of the meeting of kings! Also, I should point out that ”king” in japanese ( 王/ō) is gender neutral. I mean, I know it really is in English too (as well as in my own language, actually!), but a lot of people don't know that. In Japanese it’s always perceived as gender neutral as a matter of course. Also, I always look forward to seeing which groups the crew is going to form in every arc (and how it shifts along the way). Usopp and Vivi was unexpectedly fun, but also it shows that she’s really growing close to them, I think. Zoro looks SO GOOD in that coat, and it’s even better when he starts cutting down enemies. And character sidenote, he does make sure they really ARE enemies before going at them. Also, he has no idea what’s really going on, and that cracks me up. Especially as no one is telling him! This is one of the first arc where we really start to see the variety in cultures in things like nature, architecture, weapons and daily paraphernalia, and so on. The buildings are inspired by Alberobello in Italy, the mountains of a mountain called Devils’s Tower in the US. So I haven’t paid that much attention to which subtitles you’re using, but a few notes (that aren’t important but could be fun to know if you feel like it): Kuromarimo is so overtly respectful to Wapol that he’s being grammatically confusing and hilarious, and this is hardly ever translated I think. It’s just really difficult to convey, but it’s supposed to reinforce Wapol’s ridiculously high opinion of himself. Kuro-marimo means black marimo, and a marimo is a type of round seaweed: https://files.tofugu.com/articles/japan/2014-05-23-marimo/marimo-balls.jpg So cute! Also, it’s what Sanji usually calls Zoro, for obvious reasons, lol. Translations often use ”mosshead” instead because looking up what a marimo is could be too much of a strain on the reader, I suppose… Wapol has this quirk in his speech where he calls people idiots (baka) by calling them hippos (kaba). I guess he just really likes hippos? It was the figurehead of his ship, after all. Er, I think I’ll limit myself to this for now, lol. Sorry for the essay, feel free to ignore, it’s just for fun!
