This episode had different levels, little by little by progressing into it : at first, this mystery to resolve about that cargo with no one inside ; then to discover who killed this people ; then to discover a survivor ; then to deal with alliance agents so to hide also River and Simon ; then to have some interviews of our guys ; then to hunt the survivor who became crazy and dangerous, aka a reaver. I don't say I don't like it, on the contrary, I say that they had A LOT to deal with.
Still wondering about that survivor and his face at the end that we don't see clearly. I think it was on purpose to keep some mysteries about the reavers (now that we know he became one). And I have so many questions about them : how they attacked here, made the crew weak ? Turning off the air, putting a poison in the air maybe ? So the guys are cannibals but clever enough to plan stuff like that, and also organized enough to have different ships, attacking little by little further and all ? Something feels off, not logical.

2021-07-12 17:51:51 +0000 UTCI'd love to discuss both Reavers and River, especially with all of the ideas you are putting forth... but that would be spoiling things, all the way through the movie at the end. You're just going to have to keep theorizing. 😊 That said, I will say this : as @Lee said already, the show does NOT have a supernatural element, so you can stop feeling conflicted about that.

2021-07-05 13:29:15 +0000 UTCI love the Reavers. This show is very much a frontier adventure and they are like the monsters from fairy tales that hide in places yet to be explored. There's a lot a rumour and stories about them because so few people go far enough out. You can see that with the Alliance officer who really has no idea about what they are. That they were just men that went too far out into the void of space and looked to deep into the darkness is fascinating. How would we be affected if we went out into deep space and saw nothing? How would we be affected if we had to watch everyone we know be raped (hopefully to death) before being eaten and having their skin removed to be made into clothing? What that survivor witnessed was unimaginably gruesome and it's not surprising he became one of them. River's abilities aren't really supernatural, they just don't have the equipment or knowledge to easily find out what was done to her.

2021-07-05 12:37:37 +0000 UTCIf I recall correctly, they aired it out of sequence because the network executives found the pilot episodes too slow and boring; they thought that the first episode needed immediate action to hook the viewers. If I'm not mistaken, the first episode aired was The Trainjob, the episode you watched before this one. Ugh. Stupid executives. -_- It IS sad that there's only one season. The movie helped tie some loose ends in the over arching story though. So at least there's that. Watching all the support this show has had until now, it's really dumb why they canceled it. Once you're done with everything, you might want to watch some of the interviews to have a better idea of certain plotlines that could have been, as well to get to see each actor's XP on the show.
