Hello !
So far, this is my favorite episode of the show. Maybe because it was a flashbacks episode and I love that kind, it's helping us to learn more about the characters, how they met and in fact how they met Serenity, all of them. Maybe because the story was deeper than the other ones, people expressing deep feelings and fears, saying goodbyes to each other. Maybe because we discovered Mal's worst nightmare : being all alone.
He wanted that ship and that crew for that in fact, since the beginning : he had a crush on Serenity and he wanted to build a crew, a team, and the birthday scene is showing what family he managed to build for himself.

I feel like this is also most of the fandom's favorite episode for exactly the same reasons you pointed out. My favorite part of it was at the end when the used spaceship salesman was trying to sell Mal a totally different ship, but Mal was looking off into the distance at the space junk that is Serenity. A close second was the story of Jane; shows you just how mercenary he was and possibly still is, continuing to question his loyalty for a big payday. That's it. Just wanted to geek out before I actually watch your reaction later.
