Hello !

I knew Jane's loyalty was gonna be an issue at some point but still, I was disappointed here when he tried to give Simon and River. I immediately felt this action was a betrayal to the entire crew, so I was not surprised that Mal guessed it and had the same logic. Even more after Jane let Simon thank him and responded "of course, you're part of the crew".

But I can't help myself to like Jane and see also the possible evolution of the character : he didn't want Mal to say to the guys he died because he betrayed them, he wanted them to like him, think good things about him. And, coming from the guy who said in a previous episode that he's not a hero and he's a bad guy, he's here confessing that he wants to be a good person, for people to love him.

I'm still french, so I'm still sorry if my english hurts you.

😂🙈 The fact that it came so quickly during that scene... I have things to work on here, clearly 😅

*Mal leaves Jayne in the bay* Aunt Laura: You're grounded. Be satisfied you're not dead, okay? I'd hate to be grounded at your house. 😂

To add more mystery to River's backstory, in a previous episode she was ripping labels off canned food. They were canned foods made by the Blue Sun corporation. And in this episode she slices Jayne right across the Blue Sun logo on his shirt.

Lee

This was longer than I expected. My bad.

Man, Joss Whedon, the guy behind Firefly, was also behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. If you haven't seen those shows, each season was about 20 episodes, and they all had slow burn over arching storylines. Most of the episodes were self-contained adventures, but usually contribute something down the line. So, I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until the day I die, it's a real fucking shame that Firelfy was cancelled. I think you were correct with the assumption that people who think the show is all about the characters is because it only had one season, so we viewers can't really appreciate the growth of all the story seeds that were planted and can only really appreciate what shines on screen, which are the characters. Also, I think some of the cast mentioned in interviews that they knew they were going to get canceled while they were filming episode 13. I'm not 100% on that, it's just what I remember. This episode was great. I really appreciate the real moments with Jayne when he's not just a comic relief or the muscle, where we get to know more of who he is as a person. It's so easy for this role to just be the bland henchman, but to give him this type of conflict endears his personality to me more. One thing I wanted to point out is that, technically, while the crew of Serenity are the protagonists of the show, they're actually the "bad guys" of the universe. They're thieves and smugglers at best. One of the things I appreciate about this show is how everything is not black and white; a lot of where the show exists at is in a morally gray area. Is it moral to steal from a hospital? No, of course not. But is it moral for the Alliance to ignore the needs of the outer planets (like they did in episode2)? Also no. So it's that moral complexity that I enjoy from this show. Just to add, I think that a hospital in a core planet like that is likely to have multiple storage rooms and our crew just robbed one. So I'd like to think that nobody really got affected by it.
