THE LEGEND OF KORRA 2X04 EXTENDED REACTION

EXTENDED REACTION PART, ONE WEEK SOONER, NO ADDS

Hello !

So I was wrong to think that Unalaq tried to do things right, even if it was in a wrong way. From the beginning, the guy's main motive was only to have power : he trapped his brother before by hiring these guys and planning the forest situation, and he trapped him again here by accusing him of being a rebel. And now what, a war between brothers who is gonna get people dead ? I hate that. I really hope that the President, whoever he is, is gonna listen to Korra.

About Tenzin's ark, I'm glad all siblings are reconciling with each other but the fact they were like that because of Aang being a "bad" dad, it's making me so-so sad. I understand the logic of making him human, able to make mistakes, but I don't like it : at the end of ATLA, I imagined a bright future for characters I love and I don't want it to be ruined.

I'm still french, so I'm still sorry if my english hurts you.

I'm glad you appreciated the reconciliation between the siblings - even if it does still leave the issue of Aang's parenting towards his two oldest. I think I've already mostly said what I wanted to about that already. I do like how these two episodes tie in the "Civil Wars" between the North/South, Tonraq/Unaloq, Aang's kids, and the Airbender kids. Since Korra's episodes are so connected together (in comparison to AtLA which had much more stand-alone episodes), when they have 2-parters like this, it almost doesn't feel like it, because its not too different from the other episodes in the season. However, there is one more 2 parter toward the middle of this season that you probably want to plan to watch together (if you haven't watched them already, they're episodes 7 and 8).

Yeah I was always a little surprised that Bolin's relationship with Eska was able to be passed off as comedic (for myself included). I think maybe its just portrayed to not be that serious (unlike Mako and Korra, who have a relationship that seems real with real problems) and so over-the-top that its not meant to be taken as seriously? I definitely agree with you though that nobody would find it funny or in any way acceptable if the roles were reversed. What I don't really like about Bolin's portrayal, which is probably one of the worst in this episode, is how dumb he can sometimes be. I'm all for characters who don't always think things through or have weaknesses in things like planning things out, but I never like it when a character is literally unbelievably dumb - like trying to bribe some randos.

Like I said earlier, I don't care for Aang's portrayal as a father. I can believe in favoritism, I can't believe in straight up neglecting the other kids. The writers went overboard in my opinion. I guess it doesn't matter anymore, because this is never brought up again πŸ˜… I never trusted Unalaq, so I wasn't surprised when he turned out to be a villain. He was suspicious from the start. Patreon cut me off before I was finished πŸ˜‚. I was gonna say that I'm glad to watch Varrick's scenes in this season again. He's one of my favorite characters, because he's complex and has multiple sides to his personality. Poor Bolin, the butt monkey of the show. Hahaha abusive relationships are so funny as long as the boy is the victim hahaha πŸ™„. Never thought I'd see an Avatar show make these types of jokes. It's very disappointing. I don't remember what happens next episode, so I'm not sure if I should be excited or not πŸ˜‚

Hello ! I said "bad dad" here because it was easier to say but I also said that I understood what the writers were doing, it was making Aang more human, someone who can do mistake. You're right about the fact that he had some selfish moves during ATLA, I even remember some bad coments I had when I dared to criticize his actions when he was mad at his friends and ran away, letting them alone in the desert πŸ™ˆ Here and during that episode, I understand his reasons and his emotions, and you're right, he surely had a trauma with the genocide of his people and felt the responsibility of continuing "the line" (I don't know what word to use here for the translation πŸ˜‚), to be sure to not be truly the last airbender.

I don't think Aang was a "bad" dad, but he was just a flawed person. People got really angry about this, but it is easy to overlook flaws in Aangs personality. Even during the original series, Aang was hardly perfect. For instance, Aang is shown to be quite selfish at times, particularly at the end when he refuses to even consider killing the firelord simply for his own personal reasons, and while this is understandable, sometimes we have to look past our own needs and do what is necessary. Aang running away from the air temple before the story began is another example of his selfishness, rejecting responsibility for the sake of wanting to be a normal kid. Aang was never perfect, and the trauma of experiencing cultural genocide (not to mention feeling heavily responsible for it), it is easy to see why he could have favoured Tenzin over his other children, seeing him as the future of the Airbending nation, with the hope of restoring his own culture. It is a lot of pressure to put onto Tenzin, and you can see how heavily that weighs on him and has shaped him into the person he is.
