[DBZ] 156 - 163 Reaction & Thoughts

Comments

Animaechan, your criticism and insight of the characters are something I never really thought abt or hear from others, despite watching these episodes multiple times by myself. Thank you for the exclusive reaction

Trunks was actually 19 when he and Krillin destroyed the lab, making him an adult, and thus held to the standards of one. Trunks was born in Age 766. He traveled to the future at Age 784 to kill Frieza and warn Goku, which made him 18 at the time of that journey. There has been considerable confusion regarding Trunks' age, so let me clarify the timeline. There are two distinct timelines in this scenario, and in both, Trunks is born in Age 766. In Future Trunks’ timeline, at Age 784, he travels back 20 years to Age 764—the period during which he kills Frieza and warns Goku—meaning he is already 18 at the time of his journey. He then returns to his original timeline at Age 784. In our timeline, beginning at Age 764, the characters spend three years training for the android threat, leading to a three year time skip to Age 767. At first glance, one might expect that if Trunks was 18 in Age 764, he should be around 20 or 21 by Age 767. However, this apparent discrepancy is resolved by the fact that Trunks uses his time machine to return to Age 767, and instead of waiting three full years, he only waits eight months—the necessary time required to recharge his time machine for another trip. Consequently, Trunks being 19 during the Android and Cell saga is consistent with the timeline, despite what a simple arithmetic calculation might suggest. https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Future_Trunks/Biography#:~:text=%2C%20the%20now%2019,Android%2016.

Alex

I literally said when it actually happened (go back and watch that video) that trunks is also responsible and the only reason I don’t talk as much about it is bc he’s technically underage and Krillin is supposed to be the adult in the situation.

Animaechan

Blaming Krillin for killing the larval form of Cell is both reasonable and justified, given that Cell had not yet committed any wrongful act. Nonetheless, it is equally untenable—and indeed, arguably hypocritical—not to attribute comparable responsibility to Trunks. Not only did Trunks accompanied Krillin to the laboratory, he also actively assisted in the elimination of Cell and the subsequent destruction of the facility. He had the opportunity to intervene and prevent such action, yet chose to participate. You're obviously not a lawyer, so I won't hold you to a lawyer's standard, but in real life, this type of discrepancy in accountability would raise serious questions regarding your credibility. Holding one person responsible for an act while ignoring the involvement of another who voluntarily assisted in the same act undermines credibility. If a rule or standard applies to one person, it must apply equally to all who share responsibility—otherwise, the standard itself loses legitimacy. When one individual is criticized for an act, while another—who consciously chose to assist in that very act—is exempt from similar reproach, this casts doubt on one's credibility and your judgment is seriously called into question. To criticize Krillin for his role while absolving Trunks—despite their shared actions—creates a clear double standard. Trunks’ decision to participate, rather than oppose or prevent the destruction, directly contributed to the outcome. Failing to scrutinize both individuals equally calls into question the integrity of any judgment rendered in this matter. Inconsistent accountability erodes trust and suggests bias, whether intentional or not.

Alex

Krilin definitely did some controversial things in this arc, but I like when a story is able to make you contemplate about the actions of its characters, if they did the "right" or "wrong" thing in your opinion. Everything is subjective and everyone has his own view and sensitivity, after all, and can offer his own take on things. Personally, I really admire Toriyama for making his characters doing things that we often don't agree with, because it makes his story more complex, and the resulting discussions more interesting and fun. I enjoyed the latest discussions even more than usual precisely for this reason, because I like sharing and hearing about different opinions, it's the best part about a story!

Vero chan

It's crazy the anime took those liberties, back then there was no easy access to manga so I had no idea little stuff like that was not actually part of the story... And it's not a big deal but still wish they hadn't added that

Chacho

Cell absorbing N18 is so traumatic, so hopeless.

Jonathan Solis

I totally agree, Bulma's intelligence is so underrated, the Z fighters were lucky that Goku met her in Dragon Ball, otherwise she would be this good person she is in Dragon Ball Z. Before meeting Goku she was a pretty selfish person, so I believe she had the potential to be a great evil scientist like Gero if she wanted to. Here's an interesting "what if "theory on how the Saiyan saga / arc in the beginning of dbz could have turned out if Bulma had joined the Ribbon Army in Dragon Ball (no spoilers in this video , don't worry) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWqHBa6RcYM

Cynthia NSEKE

thank goodness that part wasn't in the manga phew

Animaechan

the bad choices continue... Krillin just putting all the blame on Vegeta was so funny tho lol

Chacho

Yeah I get that, but in it's simplicity it has had a lot of great writing and thought-provoking lessons that apply to real life - this has inspired millions over the whole world. So if something seems off to me or doesn't make sense I don't want to just shut my brain off and brush it under the rug.

Animaechan

Yeah, I agree. Its good that you are sharing your thoughts, thats why we, atleast I watch your videos. I think I just go along with some head canon I can think of in dbz for certain inconvenient or incongruent story/character things because Toriyama Sensei is more of a lighthearted mangaka and dragon ball wasn't drawn so specifically with logical and thorough details.

Kautuk Nag

Of course I should be clear in the above message I am paraphrasing from an interview I read between Toriyama and one of his editors (I read through it at the end of the last video I think). The part about how Cell was not planned and only written in because of some (joking) criticism from a previous editor.

Animaechan

I just wish he gave it more thought. Even before the androids existed (in our timeline) no one except Bulma wanted to stop Gero from building them in the first place. Meaning all the characters gave more thought to it before they even had a shape or form, and decided “no one has done anything wrong yet in this timeline so we’ll just let it be”. But Krillin didn’t hesitate for a second to destroy Cell (who also hadn’t done anything wrong yet) and the rest of the lab with him. It’s not a decision that needed to be made in that second bc he was no immediate threat. Not only did we lose a potential ally, but a lot of potential tech that could’ve been reverse engineered by Bulma (like the remote was) in order to improve society. Just like her father’s (and her) inventions had done up to this point. Her dad even said Gero was brilliant and if only he used his genius for good… but basically what someone in the chat pointed out is that it was all most likely just for convenience. Cell as a character only existed because one of his editors told him the first two androids were old and fat (a letdown). Then the next two were “some young brats”. So Cell was written in and it worked out brilliantly because future cell is an exciting antagonist PLUS it was a twist that he turned out to be more scary than the actual androids who everyone thought would be the main threat. So the Cell of the current timeline became an inconvenient character that Toriyama likely didn’t have time for. He forgot about Launch after all and already have characters like Yamcha and Ciao and Tien that can only get minimal screen time and development. Plus we have Picollo so another tall green alien looking guy would just mess with the balance 🤷‍♀️ So I understand all of that, but his decision to have Krillin rush to kill off an inconvenient character has implications on the story and I just wanted to share my thoughts and feelings on that. It makes Krillin look really bad (to me). Especially in a show about aliens that look all kinds of weird and different 😅 so dehumanising someone for “looking different” is just not a good look to me… the problem could’ve easily been solved if the androids’ rampage caused the cave to collapse and set off a bunch of explosions in the lab that destroyed everything.

Animaechan

"I'm Super Vegetable" 👍🏻😏 iconic pose of him. Or maybe just a meme at this point, lol.

Delinger

Its not an established fact cell is an exeption because is a lab experiment It is an amalgam of the strongest fighters the reason that its evil its because he has frieza cell he does have other charaters trait like the lust for fights like goku and vegeta because he Inherited that from them. Having said that, I want to end the conversation because I don't see a reason to continue it.

Alex

The head canon I have, in terms of why Krillin killed test tube cell vs killing 18, is maybe the difference in empathy for an artifically created being and killing a girl. Cell is basically a lab created "monster" and 18 is , albeit cyborified, an actual human being. Just my head canon to cope with the story, in terms of how in general humans might perceive the difference. Also, just following the same thing of villains/antagonists joining the good guys again and again is not fun either

Kautuk Nag

Are you saying that it’s an established fact in the DBZ universe that morality is inherited like blue eyes or some types of diabetes? Even if that were the case, why should I accept that Frieza’s “evil cells” would be inherited in the present timeline rather than (or with 0 influence from) Goku, Trunks or Picollos cells?

Animaechan

Of course but is main trait is to be evil that why is a villain and not a good guy he Inherited that from frieza's cell

Alex

Love the contrast they show with Goku and Gohan's loving relationship vs Vegeta and Trunks tough Love.

AFLO

He could easily not let frieza cells overthrown him and accept other sides of him. That's why saying it's his genetic doesn't make sense. Frieza and king cold are the only evil guys among his cells

Martin

Wtf does that mean? Cell is not made of only frieza, but of others individuals as well.

Martin

Cell was not programmed to be evil its in his genetic, making cell good would mean creating a different creature with same appearance as cell but still a different creature

Alex

The last time i cheked goku is not evil neither piccolo or trunks the only individual that is evil is frieza, that why cell is evil because he inherited that evilness from frieza trought genetic its pretty easy to understand,

Alex

Thank you for the fun Dbzaturday!! Your reaction to the Goku and Gohan moments made my day <3. Also was fun seeing you rooting for Vegeta lol

Pokapoka

On a side note, if I assume your argument is based on information the anime has yet to reveal, there’s still Bulma to consider. She is a genius that reverse engineered that remote in less than a day. If Cell was “programmed” to be evil, there’s still the possibility she could “reprogram” him. The Cell of this timeline would not have matured to be any kind of danger for at least like 10 years, so there was no reason to kill him at that very second without even considering other possibilities.

Animaechan

Wow what astronomical projection 🤣🤣 congratulations on reaching that level of delusion. This is SCIENCE FICTION. How do you just decide Friezas cells are the only ones that matter to determine the moral compass of a made up creature like Cell? Everything we both are talking about is headcanon (which I acknowledged in my second reply to you) and we will never know how the Cell of our timeline could’ve turned out with other factors - especially environmental. Nature VS nurture is a debate that’s been going on for a long time in the real world and you just decided your headcanon overrides that. Even Goku turned out completely different than most other Saiyans because he bonked his head and had a kind adopted grandfather. It’s all fiction and literally anything could be true - UNLESS you’re using future knowledge (things that were revealed later). To make your argument, in which case you should be banned for spoiling. Anyway I’d love to hear, why does only friezas cells matter in determining Cells morality? What about gokus cells? Picollos cells? Trunks cells?

Animaechan

Ok here we have some seriuos problems understanding what the story is telling us, cell clarly is made no matter the timeline by frieza cells thats why cell is evil its part of its genetic like frieza its irredimable goku tried on namek to change frieza like he did piccolo or like vegeta is doing right now but it didnt work because they are born evil they are not influenced by the enviroment that are Born in like piccolo tien and vegeta, they are born that way thats the end of the story. Now if want to have your headcanon please do but dont spread it like its a fact

Alex

Why are you saying this like it’s a fact? How would you know? 18 from Future Trunks’ timeline was evil as fuck, but the ones from the current timeline are unexpectedly different. This was confirmed by Trunks. How do you know Cell would’ve turned out the same when there are multiple examples of how the current timeline has completely changed from Future Trunks’ timeline? Or are we playing a game where we can makeup whatever we want as long as it supports our own opinions on the matter 😹

Animaechan

Yes of course tien piccolo vegeta( not completely) have become allies, but the difference between this characters and cell is that cell doesnt have a redemable part he is evil as frieza so there was no point on saving is life

Alex

Okay well you’re welcome to feel whatever way you want about that, I’m not going to debate the pro-life vs pro-choice topic on a serious note, especially not against the backdrop of aliens, androids and a bald man with no nose 😹 krillin spent half an episode worth of time debating whether or not he should push a button and Csel ended up eating her anyway. All I said was it would’ve been nice if he spent two seconds also wondering if blowing up the Csel of this timeline was the right choice. The story has shown us time and time again how enemies can become powerful allies, the same could’ve been possible for the Csel of this timeline, but now we’ll never know. You don’t have to care, but I did.

Animaechan

I'm referring to the part where you complain that crilin didn't kill 18, but he had no problem killing cell

Alex

I asked my mod if he knows what you are talking about (because I don't) and he said "it's been a long dbz day but the only time I think we could have compared A18 to Cell is for the unlimited energy of Cell that we debated for like half a minute, and your were on the side that Cell didn't have unlimited energy anyway so... I have no idea what is he talking about" could you be more clear?

Animaechan

Bruh are you literally comparing n18 to cell? She didnt do notting wrong instead cell would kill anyone that encounters him

Alex

Primero 🫣❤️
