Yeeah the ending is pretty hard to understand on the first watch, but after giving it some thought and rewatching it.. its actually a pretty simple ending. I haven't watched Rebellion yet, but I love this ending. The theme of hope was well executed and I teared up like a bitch lol. Just like with Higurashi, for some reason I seem to better appreciate these sappy themes of hope, love, friendship etc etc when its balanced with a consistently dark story. Madoka and Higurashi are dark, tragic and depressing but at the end of the day are shown to be quite inspirational and uplifting. Now that may change with the addition of Rebellion, but I always will see the original series as a beautiful story of hope.
