I've heard the theory of heart shapes were originally butts. There is also a theory that heart shape was also based on part of the extinct silphium plant. The romans loved the plant for food and a medicinal herb, and it was also used as a contraceptive which made it associated with love and sex. It was popular enough to put on coins, and it looked similar to our heart shape.
