[OP] E1040 Reactions & Review/Thoughts

Comments

When this was current, there was a lot of hate for Who's Who for being "racist" and "bigoted". The thing is, anyone who actually paid attention to what he was saying, and to the history of the fishmen themselves, would see that he was anything but. Aside from a comment about Jinbe moving fast on land despite being a fishman - where, fishmen are known to be significantly faster in the water than on land - he was being tactless at worst. Honestly, he came across as obsessed and desperate. Remember what he said: as he was being tortured in Impel Down, he learned of The Sun God Nika, who fought for slaves and the oppressed. He clung to the idea of Nika as a bastion of hope. When the guard who told him about Nika was executed (presumably for mentioning Nika, given the fear that Who's Who had for his own life as a result), Who's Who was driven to escape, and upon his escape, he wanted to know more about Nika. When Jinbe, a man that he clearly respected, given his earlier comments, came before him, he needed to know more. The thing is, Who's Who was correct about the Fishmen. The history of the Fishmen is a history of slavery - that was one of the fundamental messages of both Otohime's and Fisher Tiger's stories, that fishmen have been historically been oppressed, and seen as nothing but beasts. That idea ties heavily into Arlong's and Camie's histories, as well. If Nika truly stood for the enslaved, then surely a fishman, especially one as well connected to his society as Jinbe was, and one who lived as a pirate with former slaves, must know something. All in all, his logic and reasoning was straightforward and well founded. It's the way that he went about prodding for and demanding answers that was the issue. This wasn't some big "racist" thing where he was overtly mocking Jinbe or the fishmen. This was a man who was, in some way, broken, looking for answers from a reasonable source, in an overly antagonistic way.

My reaction was, Wtf, the government wanted the gum gum fruit? That's strange. Why it's important? Why cp guarding it? Mhmmm what has slaves, a sun God Nika to do with it? And the name "who is who" lol
