Evil Inc After Dark #23, Page 2... and about the Patreon fee...

Here's the next installment of the Evil Inc After Dark storyline written by one of my Kickstarter backers. This storyline will reveal the background of the mysterious Dr. Zapp — one of the four (supposedly) fictional Evil Inc employees that Giant Tess was using to embezzle funds from the company.

Just wait til you see what he's been working on...

Now, about those fees...

Whew. Not the best week for ol' Patreon. Earlier this week, I gave you the heads-up about their new payment structure, which increases $10 pledges to $10.64. Patreon's transparency during the first day of the rollout was... less than what I would have hoped.

A few hours after the release, they shared the backstory behind why they made their decision. (Scroll down to the "Update" subhead.)

I have to say. I understand it much better than I did originally. I'm still not thrilled with the way they rolled this thing out, but... I get it.

Your pledge

Many of you have told me you're OK with 64¢ being added to your $10 pledge. And I appreciate that vote of confidence more than I have time to go into right now. :)

A few of you have canceled your pledges... and I get that, too. This whole thing has been handled poorly, and there's been an awful lot of hyperbole on social media surrounding it.

But do me a favor. If you do cancel your pledge, follow me on Twitter (@Guigar) or bookmark the Evil Inc website and check in from time to time — especially the blog under the comic.

Because I've been publishing on the Web for nearly 20 years now, and I've seen this kind of thing more times than I want to mention. I have every reason to believe that Patreon is going to find a way to address our concerns about these service fees. They've been a phenomenally responsive company from the start, and I've seen nothing to indicate that this is going to change.

They're going to fix it. I have every confidence in that.

And when that happens, I'll put the word out — on Twitter, on my blog... hell, I may write it in the snow (when Philly gets some).

So... if you do leave, keep in touch, y'know? :)

My job...

My job, of course, is to earn your continued support.

Frankly, my job is to post such good stuff here that you don't want to leave — and to keep posting such good stuff that, if you do leave, you'll want to come back.

If I can't do that, I don't deserve your ten bucks — with or without the 64¢.

By the end of this year, I will be able to announce that I have made one Patreon post for every day in the last two years. And about half of that has been NSFW content. That's a deep archive full of work that I'm genuinely proud of — all available to you through Patreon's site, their app, and my monthly reward links for offline reading.

And I have big plans for 2018.

Thank you for your continued support, and — as always — if you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to post a comment here or reach out to me directly through my personal e-mail: bradguigar@gmail.com.

I couldn't agree with you more. I support 9 other creators on Patreon, and this change means an extra $5 a month for me. Charging all of my pledges at the same time just makes more sense. But — again — I've had nothing but phenomenal experiences with Patreon since the start. I'm ultra confident that they're addressing all of the concerns that they've been hearing about this change.

Thanks for the pointer to the updated information from Patreon. The per creator charge makes more sense with the additional information. My only problem with it is; After supporting you and a number of other creators for a few years, I consider my anniversary date to be the first of the month. I would like to see a single charge on each anniversary date for however many creators that date applies to. It resolves the problem many existing patrons have with continuing support for many creators and small dollar amounts.

Second good burn on Miss Match. Turns out she is actually head of Plots & Schemes.

Oh man! I didn’t realize that! No, this is the continuation to the Evil Inc After Dark story from a couple weeks back— with the vending machine. I apologize for the confusion! :)

Brad Guigar

Oh, wow. I totally did not make the connection as to two different stories being on a cliffhanger of a mysterious 'other side of the door'. This one continues the Soda Machine arc.

So is this Evil Inc After Dark or plain Evil Inc? It seems to follow the part right after they kicked the door in over on Evil Inc.

Rob Edwards

Oh, I'd say that's a definitely possibility...

Brad Guigar

Hmm, I wonder if Dr. Zapp will need "volunteers" to test his machine out.... As for the Patreson snafu, I guess I'm lucky that I only support 2 or 3 creators, so the new charges don't add up to much for me, but I can understand for someone who supports a bunch of creators if this will affect their bottom line.
