Gibson Girls Pages 1-11

Here's my latest draft of the Gibson Girls with some new pages!

Like usual, with things, it ain't done until it's done so you're seeing the raw, unpasteurized comic pages right now. I've realized by starting to add the dialog that some pages will definitely need a little rework so things can flow a little more smoothly, but that's something I'll fix later!

What's more pressing is Page 1 πŸ˜” I think I'll split page 1 into two pages to let everything breath a little bit better and also put in better drawings! πŸ˜… Now that I've gotten a better handle on the characters and style that first page is rough!

It's not unusual that the first page is my least favorite, and I usually try to establish a lot really quickly, but I'm realizing now that I have too much dialog in a small space. Also, it doesn't really convey the kinda excitable, nervous nature of Eileen. She looks elegant, but she's obsesssed with Prudence and is not subtle about it, which I think Prudence finds very charming.

That's a lot of explaining but I'm trying to be comfortable sharing things that I know are flawed and get a sense of peace from the fact that I'll get to fix them later. My process is not elegant or even efficient and I hope that at least it's interesting to see things in flux while I struggle to improve my craft.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Thank you J!! β™₯️I'm in the process of reworking that page and I'm thinking with a little more room I can add some nice little borders that make them feel more like the old caption frames from old silent movies!

I really like the black expository text rectangles in page 1, they’re really striking contrast with everything else being more curvy and flowy

J

Thank you Cardo 😭β™₯ You're the best!

Winton Kidd

This is amazing! You’re spot on with your emotional pace and composition. Splendid as always! Keep up the fantastic work!

I was really procrastinating on the text tbh, haha. My least favorite part. So I decided to lay it all out in one weekend and get it over with.

Winton Kidd

I am pleased to have your approval!!!! ⭐😀

πŸ₯° Baaah thank you so much! I'm glad you're on board with where it's going. I think it's just one of those mistakes I didn't predict. It worked okay without text but as soon as I started to cram it in there I had to take out words just to make it fit πŸ˜… Live and learn....

Winton Kidd

Hehe, thanks Sebbie πŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€ I'm going to strive to maintain the balance. You can let me know if the pages look worse when I add another one πŸ˜‚

That's a great point Jim! This is exactly what i find so challenging about the project. On the one hand I want to do as authentic an homage as possible since I love the source so much! On the other, I want it to be a smooth, accessible reading experience by modern standards--which unfortunately means phones, which also unfortunately means text being a certain size. πŸ˜‚ I think that an illustrator's responsibility is a little bit weighted toward suiting the art to the medium as elegantly as possible. It's nice to know the text-heavy page isn't obnoxious to read, because I might just add more when I do a two page split πŸ˜‚ But my artist perfectionism wants BIGGER AND BETTER drawings to compliment the words. πŸ˜…

Oh wow, already? It looks amazing, you've nailed the mood. The dialogues are on point!

Wuff_Boman

Yes. This will do. This will do.

Whaaaattt??? Winton this is coming out so great!! It feels so unique, and I imagine that time period when I'm reading it. This is looking really fucking good. And I agree with what you said about Page 1. Looking back I think you're right that it needs breathing room. Give the reader more time to get in the mood 😏 So excited to keep seeing your process too! Thanks for sharing ❀️

The vibe of this comic with the text added to it is just *chef’s kiss* I agree with Jim about the first page’s text adding to the Edwardian vibe too lol πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

Seb

Really great work! You might think that the first page feels overwritten by modern comics standards, but I think that adds to the Edwardian vibe. Artists doing political cartoons and the like in that period were always cramming in extra dialogue or labels wherever they could.
