Cape Carnival After Dark — AND announcing Studio Con!

This cartoon sprang out of a Writer's Room episode of the ComicLab Pro Tips series. (The version Dave Kellett came up with was... quite different...)

Studio Con

Speaking of my ComicLab podcast co-host... We were talking about the cancelation of Comic Con this month, and we started brainstorming ways that we could replace that experience for our readers. Here's what we're experimenting with later this month:

The question is — is something you think you'd like to participate in?

It's perfectly OK if the answer is No! This is completely experimental, and I don't have any hopes or expectations attached. If it works, it works. If not, it's something we had fun putting together.

Along those lines... if we did this in the future, what could we add to make it even better? Here's the problem I'm seeing. Every one of these virtual conventions tries to replicate the convention experience. And that's always lame. I don't want to replicate. I want to innovate. So... wild, crazy and impossible ideas are welcome. It's not going to happen this time around — or at all, for that matter — but it's a fun thought experiment.

I appreciate that! And I love the idea of a Smut Shelf! Unfortunately, the artbook and the new EiAD book will not be available through Studio Con because I don't have them back from the printer yet.

Man I already ordered my copies of the comics I wanted before I even started following you, guess I could go for a physical copy of the made artbook since I got the pdf and liked the content, (I need more stuff for my smut shelf anyway)

Kendallchaos

I would participate - if I get reminded!. You are great at getting information out though, so I don't see any issue at all.

The (punch) line for this cartoon is perfect and works on several levels!! But I am loving the "squirtle" references in the comment section -lol! I love the idea of Studio Con! It would be cool to watch a live sketch and a chance to chat with you!! But I don't think the hours will work with my schedule. Bummer!

Pikachu looks like he's auditioning to be a background extra in the Al Pacino movie "Cruising."

Mr. Nobody

When playing, it's always a good idea to stay grounded. In this case, doubly so

Robert McGann

I like the idea of chatting while you sketch but I do fear I will not be able to take part so my sounds good vote is really more in theory.

John Ross

You could buy a book from that site any time. But if you bought the book during the posted times of the convention, you'd get a link to a Zoom meet-up. (Which, I suppose, you could ignore, if you didn't realize this thing was going on.)

Brad Guigar

Oh geez.....this is so damn funny!! The Squirtle comment was superb btw!

Jamie-Lynn

Brad, I'm a tad confused: If we just wanted to order a Annual Report or other TPB, without doing the convention thing, we would use the Kickstarter link? Or do you have a different merchandise link? (I'm travelling all that weekend.)

Mr. Nobody

I do like the idea for 'StudioCon'. It's still a fun way to interact and watch the artist at work even though we can't do it in person. Also good for folks like me who are a bit more introverted and not as comfortable in a big Con crowd like SDCC usually is.

Pika. . .pika. . .chuuuuu!

Pikachu looks like he's getting ready to "Squirtle"!
