It's really interesting to see how other people do things. :> I do the same thing with highlights, but since I don't paint in Photoshop, I paint in the glow by hand if it needs to be softened. (I never even considered using layer styles since in my mind that's always been more of a graphic design thing, haha.) Same with shadow color and density. I'll paint on a shadow layer, use a mask to cut out where the light falls, then lock the pixels and paint darker colors or shift the hue if I need e.g. a warm shadow terminator or a denser core shadow. I also often end up doing multiple shadow layers these days too, as I find it's easier to control the darkest areas or up the contrast that way.

one day, an explanation of certain useful functions is needed on P.S. Because for beginners it's almost as complicated as learning Chinese, there are 1 million possible options

Sora

I can point out a good number of places to get guidance with fundamentals

Darkgem

Sure, but the way I see it is generic drawing practice and technique is available nearly everywhere you look, whereas for this specific picture this is what I consider interesting

Darkgem

it helps, yes and no. Yes because it allows you to see the steps and no, because you must already have a very good mastery of the tablet for these tips to be really "useful"

Sora

Yeah! Although its called glow you can change it to act like any other layer type, so multiply/overlay etc, it basically just means it will halo any marks you make in whatever way you want~

Darkgem

Thank you so much for this, it’s very useful

Peanut

I don't think I'm fully understanding what outer glow means. Are these the hard edges where your shadows are?

Maeka

This is amazing Darkgem <3 Thank you for all the time and effort you put into this! Looking forward to more!

Def

This is great! Thanks for putting it together I'd love to see more of this thought-process kinda stuff!

La Patte

Thank you for these!

Its a tool ive honestly disregarded how powerful it is, even though I knew of how to use it. It gives some really interesting effeects

Darkgem

Yep exactly that! In photoshop theyre layer styles, you can basically say 'on every mark on this layer make an edge' So its good for things like haloing or adding a consistent glow. You can see me subtley doing the same on the tiny highlights in his junk. I added a glow layer style so every mark would have a soft yellow glow around it.

Darkgem

They are VERY interesting! Please keep doing these in the future, they're very insightful. One question I have: when you say you apply an outerglow to the shadows, do I see correctly that you're talking about the borders of the shadows where you make them darker to increase the contrast towards the non-shadowed area? I hope that's correct. In any case, thanks for posting this!
