Apologies for missing a Throwback post last week, school is very busy around midterm times. However! To make up for it here's a triple feature throwback post featuring 70's Bubba as a blast from the past. These drawings are quite old, like over 2 years old but they're a drawing series I look back at fondly for a number of reasons~
It's somewhat embarrassing and maybe silly but if there's one trope that I really fucking love its the 70's style goofy action-hero/investigator. The clothes, their demeanor, the dumb phrases, just so many little things I love about the trope I could probably write an entire essay about it. But naturally I just had to draw Bubba as one.
Character design is a hobby of mine so it was fun to draw Bubba in a completely different way to fit the trope. He was given that uniquely 70's massive mop of hair. Ridiculous facial hair that probably takes an hour to properly sculpt into the right 'look'. And of course the tacky 70's outfit with the chest exposed because well... the 70's. All polished off with some orange tint shades and copious amounts of swagger.
Something you'll have to understand about me is that I'm someone who's constantly thinking up ideas for various pieces of media or artforms. Whether that's Tv series, movies, comics, art, stories, anime's you name it. Ask me what I'm thinking and there's a more than likely chance I'm thinking about something along those lines. The impetus behind the creation of 70's Bubba was thinking up an animated series/cartoon I would love to exist featuring none other than 70's Bubba.
The setting is Los Angeles(because it's always Los Angeles in these stories) and our protagonist Bubba is an ex-detective who now works outside the law to combat the food mafia that has moved into town. He's quick as a whip but its buried under layers of pigheaded stubbornness and flirtation. (A very original and not all cheesy plotline). Basically just imagine 70's Bubba sitting around in various diners and burger points stuffing his face and asking people about leads. Lots of fat mishaps like too-small doors, cars and other things. (See the 3rd drawing, I recognize that the font is not legible. It reads: "As soon as I squeeze through this darn door Imma squash you punks! And I mean that literally!) Fun fight scenes where he utilizes his massive size mixed in with martial arts (you know just belly bump someone into a wall and then round-house kick 'em). All sorts of fat and food related puns and catchphrases as well. Maybe the image is better in my head than I can hope to describe, but needless to say its a creative endeavor I would love to see come to fruition but alas drawings is the best I can manage short of an entire production studio.
Perhaps I'll have to update 70's Bubba's art now that I've improved so much? What do you think of 70's Bubba?
