Li Yexing and Kanan sat inside the damp cave, taking a brief rest.
"Has that thing gone?" Li Yexing asked wearily after a while.
"It seems like it's still nearby," Kanan replied in a low voice, pointing to her chest. "I can vaguely sense it, probably wandering around here."
"What the hell is that thing?" Li Yexing frowned and muttered, "I saw the parasite in its mouth."
"Looks like a lizard, but it's just too ugly and its body is too excessive," Kanan whispered. "Probably a monster released by Tricell."
A lizard... Recalling the appearance of the monster, Li Yexing couldn't help but think of the boss from Resident Evil 4 - the Lake Monster, Del Lago. It was a monster that wandered in the nearby lakes of the village, looking like a salamander or a catfish, but with an enormous size that could be compared to a whale. It could easily capsize small boats, and the monster that had just chased him was similar to the Lake Monster, with a parasite stuck in its throat.
The creature guarding the outside was probably a similar creature too.
"Hey, mercenary..." Kanan seemed a little bored and asked softly, "Do you have any cigarettes?"
"Oh, right! I almost forgot about the cigarettes!" Li Yexing said excitedly, pulling out a crumpled cigarette pack from his pocket. When he opened it, his face turned a little ugly.
"Fuck, it seems a little damp... I don't know if we can light it," Li Yexing frowned.
"Don't say so much nonsense, give me one quickly," Kanan impatiently waved at him.
He casually took out a cigarette and put it in his mouth. Then he stood up and sat down next to her, handing her one too.
Kanan took the cigarette and put it in her mouth, then turned to him and asked, "Where's the lighter?"
He took out a lighter and lit it between the two of them. The two cheap cigarettes collided with each other in the flame and then emitted a wisp of smoke.
"Feels good..." Li Yexing extinguished the flame, took a deep breath, and exhaled a few smoke rings. He leaned back against the stone wall, satisfied, and turned to ask her, "How's your arm? Still hurting?"
"It's much better..." Kanan smoked and turned her head to him, "Thanks."
"Thanks for what?" Li Yexing asked.
"For the cigarette, what else?" Kanan had a mischievous smile on her face.
"No need, just consider it as a way of repaying you for saving my life," said Li Yexing with an indifferent expression.
"You're so daring; you dismissed me with just a cigarette..." Kanan chuckled and said, "Is your life really that cheap?"
"Please, I'm just a mercenary, I'm worthless," Li Yexing replied.
"Heh..." Kanan's face carried a mocking smile as she softly said, "We are indeed of the same kind."
He didn't have much to say in response to her words, so they both fell silent. They sat side by side, listening to the sound of the rain, leaning against the rock wall, and smoking until only the butt of the cigarette was left in their hands.
"Mercenary... are we just going to stay here like this?" After a while, Kanan broke the silence and asked.
"What else can we do?" Li Yexing replied, "We can't take care of that monster who's guarding us right now..."
"By the way, back in the day when the revolutionary army was still around, we dug a lot of tunnels to deal with the government and other external forces," Kanan said without directly responding to his words. She looked up at the top of the cave and spoke softly.
"So what?" Li Yexing asked.
"Well, it's nothing..." Kanan's face carried a slightly arrogant yet somewhat fierce smile as she said, "I just feel that the upper cave we are in right now doesn't seem naturally formed..."
Looking at his puzzled face, Kanan laughed and said, "The size of this cave is too regular, it's almost like it was carved out specifically for people to pass through."
"Are you saying... this cave was man-made?" Li Yexing asked in surprise.
"That's what I think..." Kanan said, "If this cave was artificially excavated, then where do you think it leads?"
"Outside the valley?" Li Yexing asked.
"Who knows..." Kanan stood up, turned her head, and looked at him with a smile, "Do you want to walk with me inside? Mercenary."
"Don't call me mercenary..." Li Yexing stood up and patted his butt, "I told you, my name is Li Yexing."
"Okay, okay... Li, are you interested in exploring inside with me?" Kanan asked with a smile.
"Of course, otherwise why would I stand up?" Li Yexing replied, "Let's go and see what's inside."
The two smiled at each other, shoulder to shoulder, and stepped into the endless darkness together.

Meanwhile, in another corner of the world, two transport planes were crossing the ocean, heading towards Africa.
In the cabin of the transport plane behind, several people were seated in their seats. They were all dressed in black combat clothing, wearing black bulletproof vests, holding HK-416 rifles, and wearing night combat tactical helmets. Their faces were covered, resembling a legion of clone soldiers, maintaining identical postures with their heads lowered and not uttering a word. Their whole bodies emitted an aura unlike that of living beings, and through their combat clothing, one could vaguely see their pale gray necks exposed.
Among them was a small girl with snow-white skin, wearing a black eye patch over her left eye, dressed in the same black combat clothing and bulletproof vest, and holding a lollipop. She was kicking her legs out of boredom.
After a while, seemingly a bit displeased, she wrinkled her petite nose and stared with her right eye resembling a ruby, wearing a discontented expression. She spoke through the communicator, "Hey! Human! Can you hear me?"
"I hear you, I hear you," came the voice of the airplane pilot through the communicator, and he obediently asked, "Captain, is there something wrong?"
"Not really, I'm just bored, and I want you to tell me a joke," said the blonde girl, looking unhappy.
"Sorry, Captain, I'm busy..." The voice of the airplane pilot came through the communicator.
"You boring guy, I'll kill you!" The already unhappy blonde girl became even more unhappy and unreasonably kicked her legs like a child throwing a tantrum. "I'll kill you, kill you, kill you! I'll be the first to kill you when we get off the plane!"
"Captain, don't joke around, I'm a coward..." The voice of the airplane pilot came out of the communicator, sounding terrified.
Feeling the fear of the airplane pilot, the blonde girl seemed to be in a slightly better mood.
She hummed a tune, looked at the motionless people around her, and muttered to herself with disdain, I really don't understand why Father made me bring this group of useless people who can't even speak. T-Lillian can handle everything on her own, and that boring human too. Seriously..."
In the cockpit of the transport plane, the airplane pilot sitting in the pilot's seat listened to the voice of the girl through the communicator and his face was full of disgust.
"Why me, why am I doing this mission? Bringing a plane full of monsters, one of whom is a stinky little kid with an unbearable attitude, it's really awful..."
