[WDIDWAMGB] Chapter 99: Lizard Lair?
Added 2023-04-10 17:54:22 +0000 UTCThey didn't dwell too much on why they had to find something in the restroom.
Together, they searched the third floor and Li Yexing found a small handgun that was suitable for a woman's use, along with two boxes of bullets in an office, and handed them to Kanan.
She played with the gun for a while and then casually placed it on the table, with a hint of regret on her face, "It's rusted, can't be used anymore."
Apart from these, they found nothing else. No identification, no proof of identity. The only document they found in the office on the third floor was just a list of procurement records for everyday items, drugs, and matters related to the use of backup transport helicopters for the experimental center.
The original occupant of the office was probably in charge of logistics.
"This document says there is a helipad on the top floor of the largest building, and there is a helicopter that can fly out directly from the hole in the dome," Li Yexing said excitedly, holding the document in her hand.
"Well, that's good news..." Kanan sneered, "I just hope those guys didn't drive it away while they were in the car."
"In any case, it's worth a try." Li Yexing smiled.
After leaving the three-story building, Kanan suggested searching for the slightly larger building across the street, and as for the largest building, she wanted to leave it until the last evacuation.
"No problem." Li Yexing nodded in agreement with her suggestion and whispered, "Honestly, I still hope to find some cold weapons, like knives or crowbars..."
Walking through the scattered bones, the two went straight into the slightly larger building.
The interior of this building was somewhat similar to the small building before, with broken glass, moldy walls, and several rotten corpses lying haphazardly in the lobby. The floor was also stained with black-brown bloodstains. Looking at the clothes of those corpses, they seemed to be security guards or something.
Li Yexing even found a handgun on the waist of one of the corpses, but it was more severely rusted than the one they found before and clearly couldn't be used.
Li Yexing casually pulled out a somewhat rusty dagger from the belt of a corpse, wiped it on his pants leg, and then put it in his own belt. He turned to Kanan and said, "Do you want one too?"
"Of course," Kanan replied, and so Li Yexing pulled out a similar dagger from another corpse, wiped it on his pants leg, and handed it to her.
After Kanan took the dagger, she didn't immediately sheathe it in her belt. She just held it in her hand, and asked, "Where should we start searching?"
"Let's start from the closest room..." Li Yexing pointed to the small room next to the main entrance and said, "That seems to be a communication room, so let's start there."
The two of them walked towards the communication room.
The door to the room seemed to be locked, and Li Yexing tried to turn the doorknob with force. As a result, the doorknob was pulled directly from the rotting door, and a bunch of unnamed insects crawled out of the broken lock hole and scattered away. They heard a *CLANG* sound from inside the communication room, followed by the sound of the door slowly creaking open.
Li Yexing and Kanan stood motionless at the door. After confirming that there was no sound around them, they slowly pushed open the half-open door of the communication room.
Inside the communication room, there was a corpse sitting in front of the small window. He was lying back in his chair, with the dry and rotten flesh tightly attached to his bones. His hands hung down, and a wound on his wrist could be vaguely seen. He seemed to have died from cutting his wrist, and there was a large patch of black blood stains on the floor. Hanging from his waist was a large bunch of rusty keys.
Li Yexing casually pulled the keys from the corpse's waist, without paying attention to the corpse. He gently opened the drawer in front of the corpse, which contained two sets of playing cards, half a box of cigarettes that had not been smoked, and a pile of miscellaneous documents stacked haphazardly, seeming to be some sort of list.
While Kanan searched around the beds, Li Yexing carefully took the pile of documents out of the drawer. The documents listed a large number of names of people, along with the corresponding gun models, registration dates, and the locations of backup power sources. As he flipped through the pages, he found a communication notice, which stated that a handgun had been lost from the equipment room a few months ago and was being investigated.
"Hey, Kanan, it seems like we're in the right place..." Li Yexing whispered to Kanan, "This building seems to be the office building for the security personnel of this facility, and there's even an equipment room inside..."
"Really? That's good news..." Kanan turned her head to look at Li Yexing with some excitement, but then her pupils suddenly shrank and she exclaimed, "Be careful!"
Li Yexing was taken aback and felt a damp hand grab his arm. He turned around and saw the corpse that had just been lying still in the chair move! It grabbed his arm and opened its mouth wide, looking as though it was about to bite him.
Li Yexing remained calm and kicked the corpse in the chest, flipping it onto the ground. As the creature tried to crawl up, he took a step forward, and with a swift motion, stomped on its head, crushing it with a crisp sound. Disgusting fluids spattered onto Kanan's feet.
"What... what is this thing..." Kanan was clearly taken aback. Her expression was mixed with shock and unease as she whispered, "Isn't this guy already dead? He's so rotten, how can he still move?"
"This is a zombie, a product of humans infected with the T-Virus..." Li Yexing frowned as he looked at the crushed head on the ground. "Because of the infection, these creatures have an unusually strong life force and are driven solely by their desire to feed. The only way to kill them is to destroy their brains."
"Blow off their heads? I understand that..." Kanan whispered, "If that's the case, it would explain why there are so many corpses outside and why those Europeans were so anxious to leave..."
"A serious biohazard outbreak occurred here..." Li Yexing whispered. "But I still don't think it makes sense. While zombies have a strong infectiousness, they move slowly and are not difficult to kill. Any security personnel trained in this area should be able to handle this situation. Even if the situation was critical, it shouldn't have been so chaotic that they couldn't handle the aftermath and had to flee in panic..."
"Unless something appeared here at the time that the facility security personnel couldn't handle, such as..." Kanan whispered.
It seemed like a sudden inspiration flashed through their minds, and both of them lifted their heads, looking into each other's eyes, and said in unison, "The lizard!"
"That makes sense!" Li Yexing said excitedly in a low voice, "This should be a secret research facility of Tricell Pharmaceuticals, and that lizard is the B.O.W. they developed based on the Las Plagas parasite. Several months ago, for some unknown reason, it went out of control, causing damage to the facility and directly leading to the leakage of the T-Virus. The facility's armed guards were unable to deal with the lizard, so they had to evacuate urgently..."
"Although I don't really understand what you're saying about the T-Virus and all that," Kanan frowned and said, "If your speculation is correct, doesn't that mean... this big hole is the lair of that big lizard?"
Upon hearing Kanan's words, Li Yexing's excited smile froze instantly on his face...
