Ignoring the soreness all over her body, Kanan sat up and surveyed her surroundings. It was a small room, not well-decorated but very clean, with some miscellaneous daily necessities scattered about. Kanan was sitting on a large bed.
Outside the window next to the bed, there was a noisy commotion.
Kanan looked out and saw a spacious courtyard with a truck covered in iron plates parked in it. Li Yexing and a stranger were huddled around a small pot, drinking beer, while a gray-haired woman in a strange maid outfit chatted with a small silver-haired girl next to them.
Li Yexing seemed to feel Kanan's gaze and turned his head to look at her through the window. He smiled and stood up, holding a can of beer in his hand, and walked into the room.
Shaking the beer can in his hand, Li Yexing, with many small wounds on his face, smiled and asked, "Do you want a drink?"
Without saying a word, Kanan took the beer can from Li Yexing's hand, pulled the tab, and took a big gulp. The icy liquid flowed down her throat and into her stomach, instantly revitalizing her. She drank half the can before stopping, let out a burp, and asked him, "Got a cigarette? Give me one."
"Just woke up and already smoking and drinking..." Li Yexing chuckled, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a crumpled pack of cheap cigarettes. He took one for himself and gave one to Kanan, who took it and held it between her lips.
Kanan looked up and asked, "Got a light?"
"Why the rush?" Li Yexing asked, holding his own cigarette. He took out a windproof lighter from the dry, wrinkled cigarette pack, but Kanan suddenly put her hand up to stop him.
Li Yexing looked up and saw an inexplicable feeling in Kanan's eyes.
He suddenly understood and leaned in with a smile, and Kanan smiled too. The cheap cigarettes in their mouths were lit by the flame of the lighter simultaneously.
Li Yexing took a deep drag of his cigarette and took a sip of beer. Kanan sat on the bed, leaning against the window frame, rolling her eyes at him while two puffs of white smoke escaped her nose.
"Don't look at me like that," Li Yexing frowned. "It's as if I rolled something else in my cigarette."
Kanan smiled and ignored Li Yexing's teasing. She asked, "Where are we? How long was I unconscious?"
"This is our temporary base in Malvia," Li Yexing took another drag of his cigarette. "As for how long you were unconscious, it was two days and one night, to be exact."
"Oh my god," Kanan rubbed her forehead. "I can't believe I was out for that long. No wonder I'm so hungry."
"If you're hungry, let's eat," Li Yexing smiled. "We're cooking hotpot in the yard."
Li Yexing then led Kanan to the yard, brought over a small stool, and gave her a clean set of utensils.
Kanan enjoyed a bowl of instant noodles with slices of canned luncheon meat and some unidentified wild vegetables. She was so hungry that she let out a sound of satisfaction. After eating half a bowl, she looked up and asked, "So, after I passed out that day, what happened? How did we get out?"
"Oh, that's simple," Li Yexing chuckled. "Remember that guy in sunglasses? I beat him up, and he let us go."
Kanan spat out her noodles onto the floor in surprise.
"Hey! You almost spit in the pot!" Leon, who had been silent the whole time, frowned.
"Just you?" Ignoring Leon's displeased face, Kanan looked at Li Yexing with a mocking smile. "If you can beat that guy, I'll eat this whole pot."
"Okay," Li Yexing waved his hand in disappointment. "I got beaten up badly that day, but my backup arrived, and I took you away. It's that simple."
"That's about right," Kanan didn't ask who the backup was. She took another bite of her noodles and asked, "So, what will you do about Tricell?"
Upon hearing the question, Leon also looked up.
"I was just about to say that..." Li Yexing laughed, "No need to worry, I negotiated with Omar, the person in charge, and we got four million dollars in exchange. I can take you away."
"Tsk..." Kanan's face showed a hint of displeasure.
"By the way, Leon, your mission here is pretty much completed," Li Yexing turned to Leon and said, "We've figured out the situation with Malvia. An organization called Black Umbrella is collaborating with Tricell Pharmaceutical. The Malvia's Government and the Rebels are both pawns on their chessboard. They supply Las Plagas parasites to both sides and then collect experimental data by having them fight each other on the battlefield."
"How did you find out?" Leon asked with a frown.
"I found a related document in the abandoned research institute in the Cannibal Valley. It's clearly written on it," Li Yexing replied.
Leon's eyes lit up, "Where is the document? Where did you put it?"
"I threw it away," Li Yexing answered calmly.
"You!" Leon was instantly furious, "How could you throw away such an important thing? That's crucial evidence that Tricell Pharmaceutical is suspected of developing B.O.W and creating biohazard in certain regions!"
"Tsk..." Li Yexing looked at Leon and suddenly said, "You've been in the CIA for so many years, but your brain hasn't improved at all."
"What do you mean?" Leon said irritably.
"Idiot, in your eyes, it's a document, it's evidence, but in the eyes of the United States, the government, and those big capitalists who support Tricell, it's just a stack of A4 paper, as many as they want," Li Yexing looked at Leon with a smile, "The fact is, no matter what evidence you find here, you can't bring down Tricell."
Leon was somewhat angry, but upon careful consideration, he found that everything Li Yexing said was true. He was powerless to fight against Tricell and the powerful interest groups behind them. Even the United States Government wouldn't stand on his side.
"So, are we just going to let these guys who create monsters everywhere get away with it?!" Leon angrily lowered his head, his face full of frustration. Unexpectedly, Li Yexing smiled slightly and said, "Who said that?"
"Hmm?" Leon looked up at Li Yexing, frowning. "Do you have a solution?"
"Of course, I do," Li Yexing snapped his fingers and said with a smile. "I said I want to make those damn people die when they deserve to die."
Leon and Kanan looked up at Li Yexing in unison, even Lilith and Rita, who were chatting on the side, also looked over.
Seeing that the attention of everyone around him had been drawn by the suspense he created, Li Yexing's face showed a hint of a cunning smile. He whispered, "Don't we still have Mr. Irving?"
