I wonder if Mew might have hit Ray to stop him from spilling the beans so that he could be the one to pull that act on Top in private. That he didn't want it to be in public where he couldn't have his full sudden confrontation. I agree with you that Ray was probably so mad because Mew seemed to still be OK with Top at the party even after he knew the truth.
