I'm glad you found "I Clavdivs". My reaction to it was similar to yours: as a child in the 1970s I was aware of it, and watched some bits of it, but I wasn't old enough to appreciate it properly. A few years ago I bought the DVD set and watched it properly. I think the quality of it is high, specifically BECAUSE (not in spite of) the fact that it's very low budget with small sets. Not filmed on big sweeping landscapes or in a big studio, but very small like a stage play.
