I grew up bilingual (Scots and English), studied German and French at school, and now also know Spanish, British Sign Language, and a tiny bit of Swedish, Dutch, Scots Gaelic and Italian. In the group of friends I had just after I graduated, when I moved to London, it was entirely normal to speak half a dozen languages and I was lagging behing with the four I had at the time 🤣

The former senior Labour cabinet minister Roy Jenkins was the only British President of the European Commision. When his term ended he and three former cabinet ministers formed the SDP (Social Democratic Party) was a break away from Labour in 1981. Through the eighties they were in an alliance with the Liberal Party, eventually merging to form the Liberal Democrats. Briefly they looked like they might break the mold of British politics, but didn't.
