In a bizarre move, Gerry Addams voice was banned from being broadcast in the early nineties. To get round this, news shows hired an actor to dub over him, which was always funny to watch. That was what they were spoofing with the helium in the bombdogs sketch.

I'm loving re-watching this show. His delivery of "There's growing evidence this evening that suspects in prison are being eaten by police" had me cackling right from the start. This show nails the deadpan absurdity tone so brilliantly.

England had so few shots on goal they deserved to lose unfortunately so I wouldn't say they played well. They gave a bit of effort for part of the second half but no...its a shame but no.

Itβs hard to appreciate in hindsight how ahead of its time this was and how the real news became more like it visually etc - and it became too ludicrous for satire. A similar thing happened with the Thick of It in a way, which is definitely one for the full show list (another Armando Iannucci project).

From t'internet: French explorers in the 17th century anglicized Native American tribal names, leading to the pronunciation of states like Arkansas and Kansas. Arkansas Historical Society declared the correct pronunciation of Arkansas as "AR-kin-saw," rooted in the original French pronunciation.

The confusion over the World Cup groupings reminds me of the time I tried to explain the English football pyramid to an ex. She never did fully comprehend that League One was the third tier, or that the National League was non-league.

Twat! That was a liquid episode! πππ Great reaction. So happy you're loving The Day Today. Is QB liking it?
'Cunk On Britain' is on the same A+++ tier comedy level as The Day Today. Only one series, 7 eps. You'll piss yourself.
Fake mockumentary exploring Britain's history up to present-day. The very ill-informed presenter of the series is absolutely clueless and completely deadpan serious and straight-faced throughout (but it's an act) and she interviews real professors and historians, etc. asking them the most ridiculous questions. You'll honestly probably cry with laughter. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Brian (and I will call you Brian, enough of the fake pageantry) - your reaction to these TDT episodes are giving me so much enjoyment.
As a dorky 16 year old when this was first broadcast - if anyone said I'd be watching an American watch this on some sort of strange service served by a world wide connection of computers 30 years later, I would have said, well nah.
It's such a joy to see you enjoying this - it was a bit of a tough ask IMO, but you're such an honorary Brit now that it's landing for you, and it's glorious. Thank you so much.

Yes, I'm very fond of Coogan's Run, I'd love to see KB take a deep dive into Coogan's back catalog of non-Alan Partridge stuff. But I think he should do series one of Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon's 'The Trip' first as it is much, much funnier.
Did you like Coogan's 'Saxondale' series? It's a gem.
Also, Coogan's 'Dr. Terrible's House of Horrible' is very good -it's a comedy/horror anthology. It's an affectionate send-up of UK 70s horror movies and the UK's Hammer House of Horror series of films. Only one series, six eps, each ep is a self-contained story with new characters. 4 of the eps are excellent. 1 is okay and I found 1 to be kinda meh. But overall a very funny series.
Hardly anyone seem to know about Dr. Terrible's House of Horrible. It was released just 2 months after 9/11 and got lost & forgotten.
Paul and Pauline Calf are another Coogan creation that KB and QB would really find hilarious, I think. I don't think KB has seen Coogan perform as a woman yet.

Some context for the helium taking spokesman. In the 90s, before the Good Friday Agreement, spokespeople for Sinn Fein (the political wing of the IRA) were banned from having their voices heard on British TV. So during the news you'd see their image, but their voice was dubbed over with an actor's voice, it was very surreal in hindsight. That clip was taking the piss out of that

Yeh, spot on. I think it was Channel 4 and ITV that had late-night student programming, much of which was absolutely dire: trying too hard to be "cool" and funny and was actually naff.

I think you're conflicted on whether to watch Brasseye or not. It's very close to the bone but it's a very clever satire on many documentaries that fooled a lot of celebrities in a similar way but even smarter than Sacha Baron Cohen frequently does. Always remember its satire. Each one is on a different tricky controversial subject. It's really an extension of The Day Today.

Making the Irish guy played by Steve Coogan use helium before talking reflects the policy at the time that Irish Republican and terrorist Gerry Adams was only allowed to talk on British TV if his voice was dubbed by someone else: we could see him but were not allowed to hear his actual voice. This was part of the British government's disgust with Gerry Adams as a leader within not just Sinn Fein (the Irish independence party), but within the IRA terrorist organisation that put bombs in public places across Northern Ireland and in the UK. You can see the dubbing of his voice on YouTube.

KB..you should try to check out Coogan's Run. It was one of Steve Coogan's first shows with six different characters and stories, all set in a small fictional town. Written by him and Graham Linehan, who you know from various shows and starring amongst others Patrick Marber, who directed it and who's in The Day Today and all the early Alan Partridge. It's only one short series of six episodes.

The 'Sorted' section is a perfect send up of awful 5-10 minute long youth programmes that started cropping up on Channel 4 in the 90's, in the UK. They could be considered a precursor to the life hack things you find on Tiktok these days.

Glad you're enjoying this. It's a cracking show and one of the most influential in British Comedy.
I agree that on top of the general madness it's all of the little flourishes and extra bits of muppetry that really make it.
I've popped in a suggestion for a short little clip in the YouTube reactions which is a little look back at Morris' early career in radio at BBC Radio Bristol where he played a legendary prank - which may have inspired one of the sketches in this show. I won't spoil what it was. But it was VERY funny.
There's also a few DVD extras which are well worth watching and reacting to as well.
Anyway - great reaction - as always!

I wouldn't be too concerned about knowing these political figures. A good chunk of us don't know them, either. I was around in the early 90s, but not politically aware yet. I only know a few of the big names.
