CONTESSA DOESN’T UNDERSTAND… THE CARNIVAL RIDE

The carnival was alive with sound: the shrill screech of roller coasters, the rattle of carousel horses, and the occasional laughter of children, high-pitched and carefree. The scent of caramelized sugar and hot buttered popcorn hung thick in the air, competing with the faint, sweet waft of cotton candy drifting from the stall.

Contessa stood just outside the entrance, eyes scanning the scene before her. The carnival lights spun and blinked in brilliant bursts of color, painting the sky in neon streaks. The Ferris wheel loomed overhead, spinning its slow, dizzying circles. People screamed as they were taken through the air on the roller coasters, their faces a mix of terror and exhilaration.

Maggie, standing beside her, grinned brightly, tugging at her sleeve. “Come on, Contessa. You’ve got to try it! It’s fun!”

Contessa blinked, shifting her focus from the carnival’s whirlwind of activity to Maggie’s eager, almost infectious expression. “Fun? The rides are unpredictable, and the risk of injury is high.”

Maggie waved off her concern. “That’s not the point! It’s about the experience.”

Contessa’s brow furrowed. “Experience? These machines simply rotate in circles or through a predetermined path, quickly, with no end goal. There is no progress, no gain—only repetition.”

Maggie chuckled, her voice light. “Yeah, well, that’s sort of the point. It’s just something people do to let go… to feel alive.”

Contessa watched a group of teenagers rush to the roller coaster and climbed into the seats, their excitement palpable. A few moments later, they shot through the track, screaming at the top of their lungs.

That’s it, Contessa realized. The sheer unpredictability and chaos is the point. It wasn’t about an end goal or purpose. It was about living in the moment, surrendering to the madness for a brief instant of joy.

A small child, clutching a stuffed animal nearly as big as they were, tugged at Contessa’s arm. “You should try the Ferris wheel! It’s the best!”

Contessa glanced at the towering ride, its mechanical arms spinning up and down, lifting people to dizzying heights before gently lowering them. It was clearly designed for enjoyment, not for practicality. And yet… there was something compelling about it. Perhaps it was the collective excitement, the shared experience. Something humans seemed to crave.

Maggie’s eyes gleamed as she noticed Contessa’s gaze. “Come on, it’ll be over in five minutes, and you’ll have the thrill of the ride and the view of the whole carnival. It’s… an experience.”

Contessa stepped forward, slowly. She didn’t quite understand why, but there was something about this ritual—something more than just the mechanics of the ride. Maybe, as Dr. Yamada said, it was time to stop analyzing and simply be part of it.

As she stepped into the seat of the Ferris wheel, a strange fluttering sensation stirred inside her. The wheel began its slow ascent, lifting her higher, until the carnival below spread out like a sparkling sea of color and moving lights. The city loomed in the distance, the faint glow of its lights almost blending with the carnival’s own.

She took a deep breath. The air felt fresher up here, cleaner, as if she were momentarily removed from the rest of the world.

For the first time, she allowed herself to relax into the sensation of movement, of height, of being part of something without purpose. The gentle sway of the ride felt… strangely comforting.

The warm sound of Maggie’s laughter reached her ears, and Contessa felt a small, unexpected smile tug at the corner of her lips.

And as the wheel turned slowly, higher and higher, she let herself feel it, the moment of pure, uncalculated enjoyment.

Her laughter joined the others.
