(PU) FALLING FORWARD

The hallway between periods was only half-full, filled with scattered conversation, lockers shutting and opening, and the slap of sneakers on tile. Taylor kept her head down, books clutched tightly to her chest. She wasn’t trying to hide—Naruto-sensei had said that hiding could make you a target, not invisible—but old habits died hard.

She spotted them before they saw her.

Emma and Madison leaned against the lockers up ahead, trading whispers with smirks as they looked around. Taylor’s stomach tightened, and her steps slowed for half a beat, then quickened. Maybe if I just keep moving, they’ll—

Too late.

“Oh look,” Madison sing-songed, her voice just loud enough to draw attention. “It’s Naruto’s favorite little grasshopper.”

Taylor stiffened but didn’t stop walking. That would only invite more insults.

Emma pushed off from the lockers, slipping easily into stride beside her. She wore that sickeningly sweet smile she saved for adults. “Gotta say, Tay-Tay. All that ‘zen warrior’ nonsense really suits you. You almost don’t look like a drowning rat today.”

Taylor bit the inside of her cheek hard. Keep walking, she told herself. Don't react.

Behind her, Madison giggled. “C’mon, do a ninja flip or something. Show us that froggy stance.”

She felt the shove a second before it landed. Emma’s shoulder bumped hers, casual enough that no one could say for sure if it had been intentional, and Taylor went stumbling toward the floor. In the past, her knees would have slammed into the ground, her books scattering, and humiliation would have risen like bile in her throat as laughter rang out around her.

But this time, her body moved before panic could take over, and even before she could think. Her backpack hit first, then her hip, but it wasn’t painful. She let the motion roll through her, distributing the impact like Naruto-sensei had shown them on the mats.

“…you will fall,” he had said, “And when that happens, you should know how to land without breaking something important.”

And when she came up on one knee, a little breathless, and books still clutched to her chest, the hallway was silent.

Dead silent.

A few students had turned to stare, with one kid’s mouth hanging open. Somewhere, a locker slammed shut, and Madison’s laughter petered out into a confused, awkward muttering.

Taylor rose to her feet. Her heart was still racing, her skin prickling with adrenaline, but she was fine. She had no skinned palms and no bruised hip, just a dozen stunned eyes and two girls who suddenly didn’t look quite as smug.

Emma recovered first, of course. “Nice trick,” she said, lips pressed into a thin line, and voice cooler now. “Learn that in ninja daycare?”

In lieu of a response, Taylor simply looked at her in a way she had never done before. Not glaring, but at the same time, not backing down either.

Emma held her gaze for a second longer than she meant to, then scoffed and walked away. Madison hesitated, still looking confused, then followed shortly after.

Once they rounded the corner, the moment passed.

Taylor let out a slow breath and adjusted her grip on her books, grounding herself with the memory of the mats beneath her feet in class, how Naruto had corrected her stance without mockery, and how he’d nodded with quiet approval when she’d finally gotten it right.

It hadn’t been a fight; she hadn’t shouted at them or shoved back. But she also hadn’t folded in on herself or scurried away, embarrassed.

She stood with her head held high.

. . . . .

The gym echoed with the shuffle of retreating footsteps and the dull sounds of gym bags being slung over shoulders. Most of the students were already filing out, sweat-stained and groaning about how sore they’d be tomorrow. Only a handful remained, those Naruto had asked to stay behind. Taylor among them.

The session had been tougher than usual. Partner drills that left her limbs shaking, followed by relentless calisthenics that pushed her further to her limits. But now, as the final cool-down approached, the energy in the room changed.

“Alright,” Naruto called out from the center of the mats, hands loosely resting at his sides, “circle up and sit, legs crossed. No complaining.”

There were a few scattered groans, mostly from Greg and the two boys from the basketball team who took too much pride in their athleticism. But no one disobeyed. Everyone here knew that being asked to stay for Naruto-sensei’s private lesson was something special. Even if they didn’t understand why they were chosen, none of them were foolish enough to waste the opportunity.

Taylor, still catching her breath, eased herself onto one of the mats, her limbs aching in that satisfying way that hinted at progress.

Naruto sat down cross-legged with them, posture relaxed but not sloppy. He looked around at the small circle of students until they settled. Then, he took a breath.

“Last thing today,” he said. “It’s not flashy, won't get you any wins in a fight, but it might just keep you from falling apart when things go sideways.”

That earned a few skeptical looks. He just grinned. “We’re gonna breathe.”

Greg raised his hand. “Sensei, we kinda already do that.”

“Yeah, and most of you suck at it,” Naruto grinned without missing a beat. Some chuckles followed. “So here’s the deal: Close your eyes, sit still, and don't try to force it. Just follow what I say.”

Taylor frowned slightly. She’d never been good at stuff like this; sitting still gave her too much time to think, and her thoughts didn’t usually lead anywhere good. But Naruto-sensei had earned some benefit of the doubt, so she closed her eyes and listened.

“Inhale deep,” he instructed, his voice smoother now. “From your belly. Hold for four. Then let it go for six. Nice and slow. Feel your body settle, but don't fall asleep.”

Taylor followed the rhythm. In… two… three… four… Hold… and out…

At first, it was just breathing. She was hyper-aware of her too-tense shoulders, the sweat on the back of her neck, and the sounds of her breathing. But after a few repetitions, those things started to slip away.

And then something changed.

She couldn't quite name it; it didn’t come with a sudden flash of light behind her eyes or a dramatic epiphany. But somewhere between the fifth and sixth breath, her body let go and she became comfortable.

Her thoughts didn't spiral. The tension in her shoulders melted away, the pleasant ache in her limbs faded, and in the stillness behind her ribs, something bloomed.

Warmth.

Like the tiniest ember in a pile of wet leaves, it was subtle. But it was also undeniably there, pulsing, just faintly, with each breath she took. Taylor’s brow furrowed slightly, but she didn’t open her eyes. Instead, she leaned in, breathing softer now, trying not to chase the feeling but simply stay with it.

Was this what Naruto meant when he talked about the natural energy in the air? About the chakra inside them syncing with it and turning into something else? She’d always thought that part was just a metaphor, something he said to keep things sounding cool. But this…

It felt ridiculous. It should have felt ridiculous. Instead, it felt right.

When Naruto finally spoke again, his voice seemed to reach her from farther away. “Alright. Open your eyes. Wiggle your fingers and toes to get that blood pumping. And try not to look like you’ve just achieved enlightenment.”

Taylor blinked back into the fluorescent-lit world of the gym, and for a second, she swore the room looked… clearer. She could feel the air on her skin more acutely, and the sounds of sneakers squeaking against linoleum as students got to their feet echoed differently. Every sensation felt more defined, like someone had turned up the resolution of the world just a notch.

She didn’t make this known though as she stood, gathering her things in silence. It might’ve been her imagination. Maybe she was just lightheaded from the workout, or maybe the breathwork had relaxed her more than she expected.

But when she turned to leave and caught Naruto’s eye, he was already looking at her. He gave her a small, approving nod, and with a jolt, she realized that this was what he had intended from the beginning.

She returned it.
