Between the two times I've watched this show myself and with a friend, the time I read the manga, and the reactions I've seen, I must have seen this part of the story a dozen times or so. I just now realized the double meaning of the title "The True Pass". Gon passed the true Hunter exam which we are told by the plot is very important, but Gon also punched Hisoka in the face - retroactively validating what happened in the Exam arc - which is the thing he personally cared more about. I feel stupid, but also proud that at least I realized on my own lol. Man, this show kicks ass.
