I think she could only feed on the suffering and desperation of those she made deals with. Fringilla was constantly getting betrayed but those she trusted and that drove her to desperately seek power so she wouldn't have to rely on others. Yennefer was afraid of never getting back her magic and in her desperation she betrayed those she love to get back her magic, which led to her losing everything. While Francesca was desperate to give birth to a live baby, and then she lost her baby.
