When they talk about him keeping his heart, I think they mean keeping his humanity, both Echidna and Roswaal have told Subaru that in order to accomplish his goals, he needs to lose his humanity and basically lose himself for the one purpose of accomplishing his goals. Satella is telling him the opposite, that he needs to love himself more. Nobody is sure of what any of this really means, so there are alot of theories. Especially involving time travel, that Satella is really a future Emilia and this why she says she loves him, etc. No one really knows, not even web novel readers.

2022-02-19 13:14:34 +0000 UTCin regards to subarus and satellas interaction: someone once pointed this out to me, and i thought it was interesting. if you re-watch subaru and emeila fight in season 1 episode 12, (the cringe one) you see subaru say " love you. because you saved me." emila freaks out, because from her point of view, subaru sounds crazy, that never happened. of course we know subarus perspective so we can understand what subaru means. now jump to this episode.... we have the same thing happen just swapped. satella tells subaru, " i love you. you saved me." and subaru thinks shes crazy. ... part of what makes the show fun/interesting is the theories......... i read this and thought it fit......................... what if they are pulling a Harry potter 3, prisoner of azkaban.?? in the movies harry believes it was his dad who saved him. the third act revealed it was his future (sevearl hours) self saved himself. slightly confuisng, well that time travel for you ... but remember, return by death, satellas power is a form of time travel........ what if emeila warps herself and subaru to the past 400 years ago. and they have the horrible realization... they need to follow thru... which might lead to the eventul heart breaking scence where subaru asks emellia to summon him and give him return by death.... it needs to be a perfect loop or they get wiped from existance.. this of course is a theory. and its kinda like a paradox, which came first the chicken or the egg? its kinda like the reverse flash killing barrys mom or barry becoming the flash. the flash had to accpet.." ohh moms gotta die or we have that flashpoint paradox, it NEEDS to be a closed loop".. its a nice closed loop paradox.
