You explained it quite well, honestly I think the translation using the word discrimination is where it went wrong as in the west discrimination carries heavier meaning than it's original actual meaning.

The priests definition of love (as a Christian) is Unconditionally treating everybody and everything equally. The only person who even came close to this description was Thors which is why the priest was so enthralled hearing about him. Basically Ragnar let 60 villagers die to protect Canute because he cared about Canute more than them which is discrimination, whereas Thors could have easily killed 30 men to be sure his crew and son survived but chose to sacrifice himself on a strangers promise that they'd live which is what the priest believes love is.
