Thorfinn's jail time and Leif's visit is actually completely anime-original filler. They padded it out so the prologue would end at a natural stopping point. I was honestly a little annoyed at how obvious they were buying time during my first watch-through (esp. when following it weekly), but now I can at least appreciate how they tried to keep it thematically relevant. The parallels are def. are made even more obvious now: the motivations within these men are all tied to a certain place. For Askeladd it's Wales, for Canute it's the paradies on earth (aka his kingdom) he wants to create, and for Thorfinn it's Vinland, the place he and his father both shared and dreamed about. But Thorfinn is still on his journey, Vinland isn't really on his mind right now.
The prologue is kind of Askeladd's character arc, we see a gradual change within him throughout this entire season. We meet him as a viking and a hired-gun. He's shaken by Thors' idealism a bit but continues his lifestyle as usual. Then the invasion in England begins and as he muses how he's aging and so close to the end of the world, he's also so close to home. Just as these feelings are welling up, he suddenly gets a one-in-a-lifetime chance to have the power of protecting Wales, by using Canute as a leverage (which quickly became making Canute king and secure Wales by becoming his right-hand man).
