ok, just to clarify in D&D there is a huge difference between psionics (psychic powers) and magic. Mindflayers are more psychic based and rely on manipulation and mind control. Magic users have a much more wide variety of ways to attack. Magic users can use enchantments, illusions, telekinetic spells at pretty low levels. Meaning a powerful magic user can do that very easily. Also just taking a stab in the dark I'm pretty sure is using something based around guilt and despair. This is just based on what I've seen, I could be off base.
