Pretty sure if I remember correctly it was only just an episode or two ago that they said the dragon and a couple of other powerful entities were the ones who locked the witch away which is the same witch that shows up when subaru talks about his return by death. This is a series where its very important to remember things. Like you will literally be super confused or lost at some points if you don't keep up with everything. Its just that detailed. Once you get answers you end up having more questions. So maybe you guys should take some notes when watching this series or just try to binge it a few times or anything that sort of helps you get more in tune what what is being said. Of course don't be too worried over it that you end up missing out on enjoying the series but keep in mind that it has some stuff that will get confusing if you don't keep in mind a lot of what is being said and going on
