In the U.S most team sport athletes are developed In high school or travel teams unlike Soccer/Football where players are developed in clubs academies around the world from an early age. The really good ones turn pro around age 16-18. The one who was dissing Japan plays in Spain since Europe is where the highest level is played and Japans domestic league is garbage in comparison.

"はい、えいごわかります。" go go Kacee! ;)
FYI: I think it's too minor to ever come up in the polls, but "Big Windup" is a short and excellent baseball anime that I'm sure both will like. Tactical, emotional, and just refreshing as a sports anime. You don't need to know the rules; the story will guide you through the drama and growth of the character.

If we talking about interesting take on sport anime, "One Outs" its pretty much 5d chess Light Yagami playing baseball while doing hazard at once. Overall if we talking about anime "never judge book by its cover" surprised me more than once, thanks for upload.
