In the U.S most team sport athletes are developed In high school or travel teams unlike Soccer/Football where players are developed in clubs academies around the world from an early age. The really good ones turn pro around age 16-18. The one who was dissing Japan plays in Spain since Europe is where the highest level is played and Japans domestic league is garbage in comparison.

Tactical, emotional, and just refreshing as a sports anime. You don't need to know the rules; the story will guide you through the drama and growth of the character.
