Death Note E29 "Father" Full Length Reaction

Death Note E29 "Father" Full Length Reaction

The author has talked about how L's admissions of "friendship" were a ploy, either as an attempt to play off of Light's emotional side by guilting him, or when that didn't work, simply causing him to lower his guard (some people theorize this is exactly what L was trying to do during the feet washing scene). It was dishonest on both sides. But yeah, episode 26 and onward is... very different. I think half of it is because of scope: EVERYONE seems to know about the Death Note at this point. It's not quite that bad, but it does not have the small scale cat-and-mouse feel that Death Note managed to keep up - I would argue - right until L's death. The other half also comes from something the author said. Which is that Near and Mello were created as "cast-offs" from L, for lack of a better term. The highly logical, possibly on the autism spectrum part of L was transformed into Near; the emotional, risk-taking L who does stuff like imprison suspects in sensory deprivation devices and shows up to Kira's graduation and introduces himself right out, that was transformed into Mello. So, one fully fleshed out, completely rounded character was cut in half to make two characters who are both not quite half as good as their original. Awesome. Thumbs up, Ohba. Nailed it.

Yeah Death Note past L's passing really does have a different feel to it, I don't think you guys are alone in that thought. ^^" Though I think that the major difference and why it's hard to watch this (especially if you like Light's character) is remembering that Near and Mellow are not Light's friends. They have one goal to bring Kira to justice. Whereas for L, he became friends with Light. Think of how L dried Lights feet in the episode where L died, it was in reference to how Jesus washed Judas' feet before he betrayed him. It's similar and the writer made it that way. You could easily make the assumption that L becoming close friends with Light was his downfall. So now that L is gone he has lost that side to him that made him human and is only left alone, with everyone against him, Near and Mellow couldn't care less about Light or who he is, or why he does what he does, or how he works. They are simply finishing what L didn't have the chance to finish.
