The thing that actually infuriated me the most when watching this for the first time, was that to me there was no question at all wheter Light would loose!
I was so mad at the "cliffhanger" after Light called out: "Near, I win" before the time was up...I thought it was just sooooo obvious that he had just fucked up (I mean, I already was like 80% sure that he'd lost when he was sooo incredibly confident in his plan beforehand, but that moment just made it 99.9%) and that the showrunners would believe I was dump enough to fall for it just felt like a personal insult to me!
and yeah, the fact that he lost because of such a dumb oversight didn't really make it any better in the next episode xD

Not that I'm requesting reaction videos, but instead of the Netflix adaption, it's better to watch the Japanese live action movies or live action tv show instead. I won't spoil anything for anyone, but they really do play out differently than the manga/anime, and they're better than the Netflix movie.

I gave death note a 7/10 on my MAL. Everything until L's death was good but afterwards it was just a mess. I don't know anyone who really cared for near or mello and the game between light and near wasn't that interesting.

The real loser of the game here is Light's mom. Traumatized daughter, Dead husband, Dead and guilty son.

i think the ending was ok just the manner light/mikami lost was pretty dumb. mikami should have just stashed some pieces of death note away from the real notebook and tested/used those before coming

Death note is really unique in the fact that the villain is the protagonist. Additionally, Light Yagami has some very admirable qualities; he is hardworking, physically attractive, charismatic, popular, resourceful, and intelligent.
But here's the thing; the character of Light Yagami is actually a symbolic reference to Lucifer. The Biblical themes in this anime are not accidental. In the Bible, Lucifer (the devil) translates to "Angel of Light" or "Light bringer" in the Bible.
The legend is, Lucifer fell from heaven. He led a rebellion against God and was punished for it. In fact, the Biblical story of Lucifer has a quote: "I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will make myself like the Most High." Now, who does that sound like? Light Yagami, of course.
The symbolism of this show runs deeply, and I've barely covered anything. I might do a youtube video on it some time. For example, Light Yagami's name translates to "Moonlight Night God" (from the episode where he's talking with Naomi Misora about their names).
So basically he's the devil, but of course that much was obvious. I just think this show is an excellent depiction of symbolism and religious themes.

I think there are two types of death note fans. Those who actually liked Light and wanted him to win against Near and those who hated Light the whole time and were satisfied when Near won. I personally loved Light through and through but I do think in the end he was always meant to die. I personally love the ending because it reduced Light back to that regular teenage boy that we saw in the first episode. Its fitting in my eyes

You need to watch Death Note twice to truly appreciate the ending. Its just a big shock on a first watch through, but when you re-watch it you can see this coming all the way along, Light seems a lot more lucky than clever and the person Light becomes in the end scene is the person he always was, previously you only saw it in cracks in his character very occasionally.

Honestly, I don't think anyone really likes the ending of Death Note XD We ALL wish L had lived and that they had showed more of Near and Mellows relationship with L. (at least I sure do) I hated the ending too when I first watched this show. And I even refused to re-watch it for some years. However, now that I think about it, I don't think a story like Death Note was meant to end satisfactory. Though I did notice one thing in my re-watch of this series with you guys. I agree completely with Near, Light was nothing but a mass murderer. When I first watched this the ending was hard to watch and I felt like they did Light wrong in the way he acted in his last moments. BUT since my re-watch I noticed how truly insane Light was throughout the series. His cool persona would crack so often, I was shocked, I literally had SO MANY moments when I was like "this dude is insane!" And the final scene really showed us his true uncensored self. (just an opinion) I also think it was appropriate for it to have been Matsuda who technically killed Light. (especially since he cared so much about Chief Yagami). I feel like Ryuk not being so involved in the last episodes was because he knew Light's time was coming (since he could read Light's years) and was just like "okay I'll just sit back and watch now." Ryuk never truly cared about Light, in the end it's like any other tale of some God using humanity for their entertainment. The Death Note universe has so much depth to it, and I loved watching this with you two so much! :) Thanks for the reactions guys, can't wait to see more with you two.

(Spoilers ahead in case you are watching along with them for the first time and haven't seen the ending yet) I feel you on the ending. The first half of the show is definitely (imo) the best part of it. I do also think this would’ve been a good series to have the villain win. But I do appreciate the ending we got too. Especially the symbolism for dying in the middle of the stairs, not ever truly reaching the “top” and also how he won’t be going to heaven or hell.
But yeah, I do agree with everything you were saying here.
I don’t know if it was just me, but when original L found things out it seemed like I could follow it pretty well, but there are times when Mello or Near found things out and I didn’t really understand the full process.
Thanks for your reaction on this series! I appreciated hearing your thoughts.
