Light saber crystal color has changed over the years originaly red crystals were synthetic because the Sith did not have access to the Illum crystal caves. that has changed. now as part of the Sith trials a Sith apprentice has to kill a Jedi and take his lightsaber. then as part of a ritual he pours his hate and malice into the blue or green crystal taken from the fallen Jedi. this corruption turns the crystal crimson. but honestly there has never been a good cohesive explanation of why sabers are the color they are. also without going into spoilers there is a way to cleanse the red lightsaber crystals so that they turn white and produce white light sabers
