Current canon for red crystal is a Sith must take a lightsaber from a Jedi as part of the Sith training ritual. Once they have the crystal from the jedi lightsaber the Sith pours in pain malice and hatred into the living crystal and makes it bleed turning the crystal red. FYI. Ahsoka took red crystals from an inquisistor and was able to reverse this process and that is why her sabers are white

2021-02-13 06:12:26 +0000 UTCKyber crystal have a complicated lore as they have been retconned several times. Originally lightsabers were green and blue because those crystal occurred naturally. Sith crystals were red because they were synthetic. Other object can also be used as the focus point. Such as Krayt dragon pearls. I have a theory that the great Mythosaurs mandalorian ancestors used to ride have a similar pearl. And that’s what is used in the dark saber to make the blade black.
