the regular cost of alchemy is the materials used to make whatever they're making. for ed to make the spear he pulls out of the ground he uses the stone in the ground, thats why you can see a big crater open up when he does it. when they tried to bring their mom back they used materials equal to a human body but didn't take into consideration the cost of bringing back her soul.

dude i remember watching this for the first time, i took a huge break from the show. it fucked me up so much. man just heartbreaking and brutal. Ever since AOT "You can't trust the government"! lmfao don't trust nobody!

They are both in wrong but I think they get a pass. Not only were they kids. They harmed no one but themselves and they were attempting to bring back their mother. Obviously it would be different if they used their friend or grandma to bring her back instead of spices. He killed his wife and daughter and by combining animals either tortured or killed them.

For "basic" alchemy, you usually just reshape or reuse the stuff around you. So Edward likes to reshape his sword from his metal arm, or make a spear from the materials on the ground, or manipulate the shape of the groud. He can't make that stuff *poof* out of nothing, if that makes sense.
