Rebels S3 E5 “Hera's Heroes” Full Length Reaction

Big episode, the heroes and you guys got to really meet thrawn and see how truly terrifying he is. His effectiveness is unlike Vader or Tarkington who wield power fairly bluntly. Thrawn’s unique among imperials because he is an an alien that managed to get promoted to Grand Admiral even in a xenophobic Empire, which shows you how damn good he is. He studies the art of his enemies to learn their tendencies, a feature carried over from his original debut in the 90’s novels which have since been decanonized. They re-introduced him here and in a née set of books as well as Mando s2, with a few tweaked character/background points but is mostly the same lethally perceptive and calculating guy. We also see he is absolutely competent with a blaster as well. Also unlike all the other imps, he has long-term vision; recall in the season opener he told Pryce his goal was to ferret out the larger Rebellion, not just rack up small wins. It’s funny you bring up Benedict Cumberbatch as a potential actor; the voice of Thrawn is Lars Mikkelson who played an intelligent villain opposite Cumberbatch in the Sherlock series on BBC. Filoni also deftly snuck in the Chopper origin story in this episode, which has been briefly alluded to in prior episodes. Chopper was an Astromech in a Republic Y-wing that fought in the season 1 Clone Wars Battle of Ryloth. His ship crashed in front of Chams’ house and a young Hera rescued him. That’s a lot of depth for a droid’ s background but Filoni is that damn good. Our psychotic, murderous droid is actually a traumatized war veteran. Levels!
