It is rumored that Lars Mikkelsen, the voice of Thrawn in Rebels, is going to play him in the Ahsoka show. He is an actual live action actor, and played the wizard Stregobor in The Witcher. He is the only person Dave Filoni had in mind for the role, considering their previous work together in Rebels. Never even considered casting someone else, and I love that. It will make the transition from animation to live action seamless. Mikkelsen is the only Thrawn, just like Robert Downey Jr, is the only Tony Stark.

Rebels made him canon, and there are several newer books that explain his backstory, but I highly, HIGHLY recommend ready the Heir to the Empire trilogy by Timothy Zahn. The books are considered noncanon Legends now, but they first introduced Zahn and remain the best Star Wars books ever. Released around 1994 they were the first real attempt to create a post-ROTJ world and were absolutely incredible. They show why Thrawn is such a beloved character; for many, these books got fans back into Star Wars after the movies sat long dormant. The fighters being created by Thrawn are TIE defenders, which were also from ‘90s legends - the PC game series “TIE FIGHTER.” They were absolutely awesome bad guy ships that the player eventually got to use. Filoni brought them into canon here, and they are still awesome.
