Something to note about the German officer's wife; the officer is was likely dead and his wife was mourning, hence the black ribbon over the corner his picture in the wife's house. It was meant to draw some juxtaposition with Nixon and his position with his soon to be ex-wife. Nixon is alive and his wife is leaving him, despite him being away liberating Europe from tyranny. And the German officer is dead and his wife remained faithful, despite the implications that he was aware or involved in the Nazi death camps.

As i studied history for 9 years its really nice to hear you guys like it and want to explore more of it, as i like movies they also will explain everything or even in "greater scale" what's really going on around accurately, so unless you want to deep dive into books or wikipedia or whatever site its gonna take some time to learn, but there are couple channels that animate/present this times in easy and pleasant way to understand, that i would recommend like "Epic History" WW1 series, whole document all parts is like 1h and its let's you understand really well what was that war about and how it started/ended. There are alike series for WW2, but for WW1 i strongly recommend this channel, people react to those too alot.

Webster mentioned Ford and GM just to say that US is better than German cars. I think he was venting and yelling at the German officers about his life being interrupted. He just spoke about not finishing college and this war might be the reason.
I'm pretty sure the Germans in that town knew what was going on. Easy Company patrolled the perimeter of the town. If all your Jewish neighbors are taken away and then there's a new barbeque factory nearby, you should be able to figure out what is happening.
