What Anthony said about the stakes i totally agree, but unfortunately old shounen's rarely have that, on the other hand you gonna enjoy the hell out of the newest arc in Bleach, its way more bloody/action packed with stakes. Kenpachi is the title of the strongest.

Aizen was Shinji's lieutenant, and the other Vizard were Captains and Lieutenants of other squads. The longest serving captains from then are Ukitake who is Kaien and Rukia's captain, Kyoraku(flower guy), Unohana(Squad 4 healer) and of course Old Man Yama.
