It's really quite simple when you look at it this way: Yami is the strongest in spiritual pressure and pure power. He's just not as skilled or smart as the other Espada, so he can't use his powers as effectively. He's like the Zaraki Kenpachi version of the hollows, but without the skill to back his power up.
