OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH EP 7 - UNCUT

Comments

I love that the shovel has a Crown Royal bag protecting the top of it. It was the good shovel, after all.

This show just keeps getting more and more adorable! I don't think I would have watched it if you boys hadn't started. I'm glad you did, and I'm glad I did as well!

This episode is hands down one of my favourite pieces of nonbinary representation ever. Not only did the show already subvert things in a queerly positive way by taking a trope ("disguised as male in a historical/fantasy setting") that's often just a metaphor for transness and make Jim a canonically nb person instead - one who's clearly and unquestioningly referred to by they/them pronouns, played by a nb actor - but this episode does something even more clever. Many of us have been in the situation that Jim is, coming home to a relative we haven't seen in a while who expresses hurtful disappointment about who we are now and how that differs from the expectations they put on us as children. But instead of having to see Jim's story reduced to their gender identity and having to sit through seeing them subjected to transphobic rejection from Nana, the same feeling and experience is instead expressed through a bigger story for Jim: their reluctance to be the vengeance machine that Nana wanted them to be. We get a character whose gender identity is a big part of them defining themselves and living authentically, but we also get more than that for them. That's the magic of this show.
