FELLOW TRAVELERS E2 - UNCUT

Comments

I love your reactions to this series. Late to this but you asked if anyone lives in San Francisco… Australian here who’s lived here for 15 years now. If you ever make it out say hi!

Chris Stevenson

Can’t wait for yall too watch ep 3 and 4❤️

Shamya Mckoy

I like your reaction I hope you react to the 3 and 4 episodes!!🥲I joined the membership because of the reaction of the fellow travelers!!🥹

jane J

Exactly! As we watch the guys and knowing that so many of us are watching essentially at the same time, we’re not alone. We may be feeling different emotions but we’re all together.

Diane Furlong

I agree that Hawk was realizing the effects of AIDS

Diane Furlong

love you both so much. i feel like im am having a kiki with friends when i watch you :)

Gabriel Roybal

That scene in the ‘80s bar in SF—I think Hawk’s warning to the young guy was about AIDS, and not a generational thing. Although I do love your comments about the importance of inter-generational relationships. And while your focus here is the LGBTQ+ community, this is something everyone could benefit from.

gailanno

I find it really difficult to watch this series. I worked with AIDS patients in the early 1990s. It was heartbreaking. We knew so little and too often could do nothing. So many lives lost. So much shame, secrets and ignorance - partners not allowed to visit their dying loved ones, families disowning their sons, medical staff refusing to care for AIDS patients... it was a terrible time. Watching this brings back so many memories. It reminds me somewhat of Dustin Lance Black’s fantastic miniseries „When We Rise“ about the LGBT rights movement from the 1970s to 2010s. (Also has an incredibly good cast with Guy Pearce, Rachel Griffiths, Mary-Louise Parker...)

Ren

Ooooh i cant WAIT FOR YOU GUYS TO GET TO EP 3!!!!! LOVE you guys❤️❤️

Shamya Mckoy

One of my favorite scenes is where the spirit of Ethel Rosenberg (Meryl Streep) haunted Roy Cohn (Al Pacino) on his death bed.

Jose Matutina

Could anyone clear up what the protocol was back there... Would they chase Mary's partner to Ohio, or are they just ok with her gone from her gov job?

Michaela Morávková

Also…. I CANNOT WAIT to see your reaction to episode 3! Lmao, this show is going to be the end of me.

Amira Mustapha

re your commentary at the end - this show, in a way, reminds me of queer as folk (us version), as in it's a celebration queer life while also showing its struggles in a very authentic manner that feels timeless but captures the era(s) it's set in very well. and both are showtime.

lo !!

I am so glad to have been born after this witch hunt, even in my country we had our law enforcement issues but not to this extent. I was able to grow up as myself and choose the man I loved and wanted to spend my life with without having to hide. Things have gotten much better thankfully but we must never allow this to happen again..

Mike B

My feelings exactly.

Dominique Berton

It's horrific. And it went on, to a lesser degree, in Britain too. My theory is, and has always been, that the rabid persecution of anyone in the LGBTQ+ family stems from fear, and is driven by people (men usually) suppressing their own latent homosexuality. It makes me realise just how bloody brave my aunt was, living with her partner from the get-go. They met as young women in the police force in the early 60s, and initially were just "flatmates", then "companions" for 30 years, until they felt comfortable acknowledging they were partners. And the strangest thing is that my cousins and I, all born early/mid 70s never gave their relationship a second thought. They just were. They belonged together every bit as much as mum & dad or grandma and grandad. Hate is something that has to be taught and nurtured. More so than love. It takes so much more effort than letting people be who they are, and letting that just be accepted. I thank my lucky stars that I was born into a family where that kind of hate was a stranger. It's meant I've always felt comfortable with who I am, and my bi daughter has never felt the need to hide who she is, who she's dating, any of her gay friends...I really couldn't be bothered with the hard work of trying to hate any of these wonderful, beautiful people. Why would anyone?

Jacqueline Hahn

I was so proud of Hawk for telling off his father. When he was talking with his mother, I was like "he's just like her", he takes the path of least resistance every time.

Jamie

I have decided I can’t watch this show by myself anymore. I watched the first one and then rewatched it here, then after this episode I think I need the virtual hand holding. Is painfully good a term? I think I’m making it into one if it isn’t. This show is painfully good. Ugh.

Jennifer

In the US there’s a national program called SAGEConnect that matches you with an older LGBTQ person and you have weekly phone calls with them. I live near San Francisco (in the Bay Area) and we have a lot of community programs, especially for our elders.

Jenny Lukan

Great insights throughout this episode! I think the idea that a gay man who bottoms is weaker comes from the fact that a woman always bottoms, right? She is always the one penetrated and anyone who wants to bottom is automatically equated as feminine, and therefore weaker, or less, than a man. It's very misogynist thinking about sex, honestly speaking. I think it shows a strength of character to allow yourself to be that vulnerable. You're allowing someone INSIDE your body, to be connected to you, and you might not always be able to control what happens during that connection.

MaryBeth Gay

I think the only way I could handle this show emotionally is with your "moral support", as funny as that sounds. It's one of the reasons I had to join Patreon. I wanted to watch the show but I can tell it's going to be too *much* for my little bi-ass heart to take. I honestly need the discussion, and you guys' reactions to pull me out of it. So far it's been great, and I much appreciate the thoughtfulness and insights you bring to it, along with the other comments on here.

Beth Gonzales

Excellent reaction, Alex and Josh! This series touches on so many issues and stirs up so many emotions while providing a History lesson

Diane Furlong

Wow, this show is beautiful but also heartbreaking. The writing and acting is just incredible - portraying these characters, both the intense scenes and the more subtle and nuanced scenes - everyone involved deserves all the awards. And as difficult as it is to watch at times, I do love that they’re including all of the layers and also the intersectionality of their experiences - not just sexual orientation during this time period, but also race, religion, family, and then both friendship and sexual relationships too. I really appreciate your reaction to this as well, I don’t know anyone else watching this so I feel like my thoughts are chatting along with you when I watch it which is nice. Thank you for your reactions and for sharing your ideas and thoughts!

Sarah Vallance (Accessible Yoga with Sarah)

Yeah, the HBO production of "Angels in America" would be a great show for Alex and Josh to react to after this. I'm pretty the 1993 play was how I learned who Roy Cohn was.

Darrin Bodner

The US Congress also legalized gay marriage across America in December 2022 after the Roe was overturned.

Darrin Bodner

Great reaction as always ! All I can say is brace yourselves for episode 3 ❤️

Lynn0816

Yeah, I didn't pick those two for those very reasons. Was looking for literary figures who were contemporaries of Hughes that didn't suffer that fate, but would have been similarly shocking. But, yes, absolutely. Also, if you haven't seen it "Breaking The Code" is a great play about Alan Turing and what they did. And "The Imitation Game" or the 1997 "Wilde" would be great films for Alex and Josh to put on their list.

Darrin Bodner

In the US Sodomy laws were deemed constitutional by the Supreme Court in 1986 and that ruling was not overturned until 2003, invalidating laws in 14 states. We like to look at this as history but after Roe v. Wade was overturned states started to remove these remaining laws just in case the Supreme Court continued to decide that a 'right to privacy' did not exist in the Constitution. If that happens, sodomy would be outlawed again in 12 states. This does not even look at the risks currently across the US and UK (and world) for Trans individuals. We need to remember our past in the hopes that we do not repeat history. (sorry I was a history/politics student and fell down a bit of a wikipedia wormhole)

Rosie Dickinson

Or like what they did do to Oscar Wilde and Alan Turing. wilde got 2 years hard labour and Turing was chemically castrated.

Rosie Dickinson

Watching this series for the first time with you - I can't wait for episode 3!!

Ouisel

I heard Josh say "witch hunt". Spot on. And playwright Arthur Miller wrote "The Crucible" in 1953 dramatizing the Salem witch trials. But he really wrote it to shine a spotlight on the Red scare in real time.

Darrin Bodner

Also, Langston Hughes was and is a US national treasure. What they did to him was disgraceful. It would have been like throwing E.M. Forester or Noel Coward before a parliamentary committee and calling them traitors.

Darrin Bodner

This show is so layered and complex it rattles around my brain so much I should charge it rent. I’m enjoying hearing your thoughtful reactions and perspectives. In terms of living a celibate life if you’re gay - this is one of the “choices” if you’re born into the Mormon religion. The other is “mixed orientation” marriage (i.e. you marry someone of the opposite sex and live in the closet - often not even telling your partner). As you might imagine, neither of these “choices” go well. There is a very high suicide rate in the Mormon community. Even though this show is set in the past - I think it might be sadly close to some people’s lives today. 😔 P.S. Have the fan ready for episode 3!

Jennifer Thompson

Was just thinking: We're in 1986. Not sure when in 1986 though. Interesting fact: Roy Cohn passed away on August 2, 1986 related to complications from AIDS at the age of 59. I don't think that diagnosis was common knowledge until he actually died.

Darrin Bodner

Fun fact Roy Cohn used to be Donald Trumps lawyer and if u want to know more about Ethel Rosenberg case Check out The play and adaptation of Angels in America which is also some gay content you can react to.

DP

It's important to acknowledge that today in 2023, of the 56 brittish commonwealth countries that still have the brittish monarchy as their sovereign, 31 have laws that make it illegal to have same sex relations or 'promote' homosexuality. In Brunei and Nigeria, both still members of the commonwealth, homosexuality is punishable by death. These people live in fear of being killed if they are outed. We should not forget that the freedoms we enjoy are a privilege not afforded by so many.

Beach gurl Bi

When Hawk was having Tim write the letter to Mary, I definitely felt he was actually telling Tim that this is going to be the fate of their relationship. Poor Mary having to give up Caroline to save herself was brutal. I just keep repeating to myself how unreal it is that this was happening not hundreds of years ago, but basically now. My parents were alive when this was happening. There's people on this Patreon who were alive when this was happening. I completely agree with Alex how it's important to have intergenerational friendships. I'm in a Friday night dinner club with gay men who are mostly in their 60's and 70's, and I love hearing their stories of the past. Of course they mainly focus on the good times, but sometimes, the darker things are spoken of, especially the AIDS crisis. I can't say it enough, this show is brilliant. I'm so glad we're all going on this journey with Tim and Hawk together.

Chris Metzger

The letter to Mary dictated by Hawk sounded like Hawk's profession of his feelings for Tim.

Jose Matutina

Thanks! The show is beautifully made, but it's painful to watch. However, it's important to learn about how far we've come since the 50s and to remember that the rights we've fought for might be taken away if we don't stay vigilant or let the right spew their hate retoric unchallenged.

Stian Kristoffersen

Very true. The range of Jonathan Bailey is astounding.

Jenny Lukan

And therapy.

Jacqui Chesterton

They will definitely need the fan for episode 3!

Jenny Lukan

Mary Johnson made me so sad/mad in this episode! Not sure if you caught it, but she was the Congresswoman that 1980’s Hawk calls in the first episode.

Jenny Lukan

I don't want to scare you, but in episode 3 I did have to stop at one point and walk away for a while. So I take my hat off to you two for persevering 💗

Jacqui Chesterton

I will be watching tonight! OOOppps...I got caught up with my art and totally forgot to watch. Sigh...lol

D.A. Rowley

Was waiting for this!! made my day ❤️

Beatriz

Yes!!! 😍
