Check your artwork in black and white!

If the artwork is readable in grayscale, it will look good with colors too. Before I heard about this trick I felt quite lost when adding colors. I was just experimenting, but I didn't have anything to rely on. Viewing it in black and white helps you focus on the values, making it easier to decide if the colors will work together.

How to do this in Blender? Use the RGB to BW node in the compositor to check the contrast of your scene, and if parts of the image feel hard to look at, then change the hue, saturation or the value of the colors until it's easy on the eyes. With real time compositing this is easier than ever, since you can tweak the colors while instantly viewing the black and white version.

Note: making the image desaturated by using Hue/Saturation/Value Node in the compositor, doesn't give you the same result, don't use that for this purpose.
